content width

When I change the content width of my site, it completely messes up the theme, and the width doesn’t change. And ideas why that might be happening?
I am trying to post an infographic we’ve created that is 2550 px wide. The default for my theme is 1660. I’m just trying to widen it to allow for the infographic to be full size. Any suggestions (besides changing the infographic)? The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi radiusgrp,
The way I would approach this would be to insert a smaller version of the infographic into the post or page. Then you could link to the actual media file so the complete image could be viewed in it’s own window.
Would that work for you?

Hi, where are you wanting to put this image that is 2550px wide? There are probably well less than 3% of the web using public that has a monitor with a resolution wider than 1440px, so few are going to be able to see your image full sized.

The content width setting controls how large media will be when it gets embedded on a page, but the page also has to be big enough to accommodate the media. What should happen is an image should be resized to fit if you insert and image that is a lot larger than the space given for it in the theme.
thesacredpath is right though, making the page itself that large probably won’t do most viewers much good if their displays are smaller than 2550px wide (which is true for most laptops).
I like sandymcfadden’s idea to insert a smaller version of the image and link it to the full-sized image directly.
