Continuing redirection problem

Really appreciate the messages from time thief, nrothe and the message from Macmanx. It has been 72 hours of propergation and nothing has happened. Spoke to my domain host 1 & 1 and they said that since I have a mail host, if I point to name server my email would go down. They asked me to request a ‘workaround’ where I can point it. Perhaps an IP address.

I also updated the name servers as suggested ‘NS1.WORDPRESS.COM…’ but 1&1 said I’d also lose my email access this way.

They checked my wordpress link and said it wasn’t working. I’m not brilliant at all this and I’m a bit stumped by it all. It was all working fine last week. In my upgrades it says the domain mapping is active but that the DNS needs updating, I think this is something to do with it.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

1 & 1 is full of it – next time ask for help from someone that is competent over there – name servers and email on a different host works fine – that is what many sites here do see the instructions below – 1 & 1 will need to give you some info on how their mail servers work and are addressed – any competent Jr. apprentice Sys Admin should be able to help – probably an A record and MX record

Formatting is very strict on the records

They are out to lunch to want you to ask a cloud based system with dynamic IP addresses to provide a static IP – the last blogs a few weeks ago crashed their blogs over 2/3 of the time when they did the static IP route

    Thanks.
I just want it up and running like it was last week!.
It all seemed to go wrong when I clicked something on the WordPress dashboard. It’s happened before and a WordPress technician helped me resolve it. Now the only message I get from them is to wait 72 hours, which I have. Last year it was fixed after I got this reply from a techie.

    Hello,

I have set your WordPress.com address as the primary option for your blog right now: https://carloprey.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains

Can you please tell me how you have configured the domain with your registrar? The method we support for setting up a mapped domain is to change the nameservers for the domain to use ours, which it is not currently doing.

I’ll be happy to help you get this sorted out. Please let me know what questions you have.

And between us we seemed to get it sorted.

I don’t know what Ryan did or your registrar – but Ryan is a good guy

What 1&1 is probably trying to do is use Domain forwarding or Forward and Mask – both have problems

Domain Forwarding just dumps your custom domain name onto your WordPress.COM site and anyone typing in the custom domain name never sees it – can be confusing and people never get used to your custom domain name

Forward and Mask – dumps you onto your WordPress.COM blog but shows a fake address in the browser – so anyone that wants to send a link to one of your GREAT posts has trouble finding the right address to send – they need to get around the masking part – or they send the fake address and tell people to “look around somewhere for this great Post” – not very good at all

The site to my name has domain mapping (and yes custom email) – so when people visit my site and find a good boating safety article they just copy the address and pass it on – happens on a regular basis – sometimes they also post a link on their site to the Post and I get some traffic on a regular basis from them – also search engines know what is on my site and have it indexed and I get search engine traffic all the time – neither of the “workarounds” above will do that

Yes 1&1 need to dig some info out – took my host a couple of minutes to get the info and send it to me – the formatting of the info when it is put in is very strict and it took me a couple of tries and I had to get some help from one of the Happiness Engineers to make it work – but you can post the info you get from 1&1 here in the forum and we can get some help for you –

then you have a valid custom address in the browser for your blog and email and more traffic

And yes I banged my head against the screen a few times getting things to work the first time – for me the stakes were high enough that I set up a test blog and bought a custom domain name from an outside registrar to duplicate the move I was going to make before moving my site that is linked to my name – so I was able to make the mistakes on a blog and domain that was not critical

    good luck

Ryan was great and sorted me out last time. I’m just not sure how he did it. Thanks for the response. I will keep it and refer to it should it happen again.
The site is back up. I’ve no idea if this is because of the 72 hour update someone mentioned or me tweaking the wordpress site. I really still believe the issue started when I hit the wrong button on my dashboard. Thanks for your help
