"Convert to regular blocks" not working for reusable block

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I am trying to convert a reusable block to regular blocks so that I can edit it without changing every other page, but the button isn’t doing anything when I click it. It was working a few weeks back.

    Any ideas?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

Post meta icons are not showing as an option for insertable blocks on my post.
I had a workaround where I could insert my reusable, GoH byline, block which contained post met icons, then convert this to regular blocks, but now that isn’t working either. I have a separate support topic open for that issue.

Any ideas why the post meta icons block isn’t available?

  • Hi there,

For clarity I have merged both of your post (to avoid duplication) since they appear to be related.

To clarify, there is currently a bug report where it’s not possible to convert a reusable block to a regular block if it contains (within it) a block that is retired.

That is the case with the post-meta block, which has been retired in favor of a different method (called the Query Loop block) for the creation of custom blog pages.

Because of this it’s not possible to use the post meta block further, which seems to be a part of your current workflow. I’m not sure I understand how you are using it now, can you clarify what you are setting up? It sounds like you are trying to find a way to add post info to the bottom of your post and I’m wondering if there is not a better way to do that.

    Thanks for the additional info!

Thanks for the response, very informative. Yes I add a byline to the bottom of every post. So that includes line break, bio and post meta icons, which give the date and category the post is in.

My reusable byline block has the post meta icons block within it so what you’ve said makes sense.

If there’s an updated way to display the same info I’m happy to change over to it if you explain what I’d need to do.

  • There’s a quicker and more automated way to add your byline information below each post. You can edit the post template (named Single) in the Site Editor and add that group of blocks at the end of the post. This way, the byline will be automatically added when you publish a post.

Here’s how to select that template and edit it:

Thanks fstat. I’ve had a play around in the Single temple page but this doesn’t really solve the problem as a big chunk of adverts are inserted between my post content and the byline.

Any way to get the ads to come after the byline?

Also with regard to staff-totoro’s comment that post meta icons were a retired block, they are available to add the to the Single post template, so I’m not sure what they mean.

  • Hello there,

Thanks fstat. I’ve had a play around in the Single temple page but this doesn’t really solve the problem as a big chunk of adverts are inserted between my post content and the byline.

On the free plan, it’s not possible to move this ad placement.

Also with regard to staff-totoro’s comment that post meta icons were a retired block, they are available to add the to the Single post template, so I’m not sure what they mean.

To check, do you mean what’s currently in the re-usable block is retired?

staff-totoro had said that the reason I couldn’t convert the reusable block to regular blocks may be because one of the elements within the reusable block (the post meta icons) was retired.

But the post meta icons block is available to use in the edit Single template screen, but not available as an option in the edit Post screen.

I’ve changed that old reusable block now, and created a new separate block that includes post meta icons, which seems to have solved the problem.

    Hello,

I’m trying to change a reusable block to a regular block so that I may alter it without updating every other page, but when I click the button, nothing happens. Before a few weeks, it was functional.

    What suggestions do you have?

  • Hi @btshoodie2, since this is a different issue from the one in the original post, could you start a new topic here?
    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1

You can add a “modlook” tag if you’d like to get staff attention.

That way the people who have been working on this topic won’t get unwanted notifications as we troubleshoot your issue. Thanks!
