Converting a website from Wix to WordPress

  • Unknown's avatar

I am working to assist my church from moving our current website from Wix to WP. We want to edit the website in WP before going live and while leaving the Wix website active until we are able to complete the edits on the new WP website. Is this possible and if so, what steps are necessary to accomplish that?? Thank you

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

  • Hi,

Yes, that is absolutely possible. Are you building the new site here on WordPress.com? Or is it a site built with the WordPress software, but hosted with another webhost (i.e. Bluehost, GoDaddy, etc)?

The site currently exists on Wix and we would like to move it over to Word Press. I already created a domain name on WP to temporarily move it over into (st-judes-mcc.com). I would like to move it to WP under that domain so that I can edit it before we go live on Word Press, while simultaneously leaving the site functional on Wix until the Word Press site is ready to launch. Then I would like to launch the WP site under the current Wix domain name and shut the site down on Wix.

  • Hi there,

From what we can see, the domain st-judes-mcc.com is registered to a site hosted on Hostinger, with whom we are not connected. To clarify, we are not the only provider of WordPress sites, and while we can help with sites we host directly on WordPress.com, we are not able to help with sites hosted by other providers.

I would like to move it to WP under that domain so that I can edit it before we go live on Word Press while simultaneously leaving the site functional on Wix until the Word Press site is ready to launch. Then I would like to launch the WP site under the current Wix domain name and shut the site down on Wix.

This process varies based on the provider you are using for your hosting. So, in this case, I recommend reaching out to Hostinger support directly so they can assist you.

Then, I would like to launch the WP site under the current Wix domain name and shut the site down on Wix.

Since our system is different, we cannot help directly, but it sounds like you have a good plan. We also recommend that folks set up a replacement site on a second URL until they are ready to “launch” the new site.

Once it is ready, the final step (at the very end) is to move your domain from one site to another. If you were hosted with us, we could walk you through this step by step. I will trust that Hostinger can walk you through connecting your Wix domain to the site they are hosting for you.

When you save the moving of the domain until the end, the old one goes away as soon as the domain is connected to the new (replacement) site. At that point, it’s as if the old site never existed, and there is no way to visit it. Anyone typing in your URL will see the new site only.

    Hope this helps!

o, I just thought of one more question…I really may not need the Hostinger site that I set up if I can set up a website on WP then copy the current church’s website hosted on WIX to WP. Can you all help me with that?

  • Yes, if you would like to move the Wix site over to us here at WordPress.com, you can do that by following the steps at https://wordpress.com/support/import/import-from-wix/

Is there someone who I can actually speak to via the telephone to assist with this? I don’t want to inadvertently shut down our church’s website.

  • I’m sorry, we don’t offer phone support, but we’d be happy to help you here.

Just to list out the forms of support we do offer: we offer forum support for all users on our free plan, and email and live chat support for all customers with our Pro plan: https://wordpress.com/support/help-support-options/

Visiting https://wordpress.com/help/contact will always connect you with your plan’s highest available support option.

In your case, when you start a site here, we’ll give you a free subdomain (like example.wordpress.com) to build your site under. That way example.com can remain online where it is, unaffected.

When you’re done building example.wordpress.com to your liking here, we have two ways to point example.com to your new site:

Domain Connection allows you to keep the domain registered with your current domain registrar and direct it to your WordPress.com site: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/

A transfer would allow you to manage both your site and domain from the same place: https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/

In short, you can take all the time you need to build your site here without affecting the existing site, and you won’t need to direct the domain to the new site until you’re absolutely ready to launch. :)

Please let us know if you have any more questions!
