Converting from Existing Website to WordPress – Need Referral and Help!

  • Unknown's avatar

I had a website built and maintained by FindLaw for 15 years. I stopped using them 2 years ago, and have the website that they built, which I need converted to WordPress. Is there a company you recommend I hire to do this? I have other questions too. Is there someone I can speak to about different options. New at this, so no public shaming . . . if these are stupid questions!

    Hello @germlaw,

Thank you for considering WordPress. Before I go any further in answering your question, it is important for you to know that WordPress comes in two flavours. WordPress.com and WordPress.org. Learn more about the difference between the two through the link below:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

And now, if you choose to bring your site to life on WordPress.com. Read on.

I had a website built and maintained by FindLaw for 15 years. I stopped using them 2 years ago, and have the website that they built, which I need converted to WordPress.

Here are a few steps to accomplish what you are asking for.

Step 1: Browse through the available WordPress.com plans and purchase the best suitable plan for your site.
    Step 2:
    – Understand the two possible options to bring your site over to WordPress.
    – You can either have it Mapped or Transferred.
    Step 3:
    – Regardless of the source of the import, only content i.e, pages, posts, comments, images, etc… can be imported to WordPress.com.
    – Themes or designs cannot be transferred over, so it is not possible to achieve a ready made conversion of the site. I hence recommend you start fresh with a new design selecting from the many themes in the WordPress.com Theme Showcase. The themes are user friendly and easy to customise.

I have other questions too. Is there someone I can speak to about different options.

We the volunteers would be happy to assist you here in these forums. You can always reach out to a staff member here by adding the modlook tag to your thread.

If you prefer the conversation to be private, you can reach out to WordPress.com at help@wordpress.com.

Is there someone I can speak to about different options.

I suggest you discuss the possible options in the forums to start with. The reason I vouch for this approach is because the forum has many experienced WordPress users and will turn out to be very useful in helping you make an informed decision. This is the case if you chose either of the WordPress options.

Of course not! This forum has personally helped me start from scratch and now made me slightly equipped to help others. Feel free to start being as naive as you are. An expert at anything was once a beginner too, isn’t it?

I hope I have answered your questions in detail. Please go through this answer and feel free to write back with more questions.

Happy to help. All the best!
