Converting my paid account into a free account

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi. I am currently feeling low on blogging hence would like to convert my paid WordPress site into a free one. Can you please help me with how it is done? Wot about the contents? Will it get transferred over to the free account?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi –

Yes, we can help you get this sorted. All of your content will remain. There are some things to consider first.

    – how much media storage will you need?
    – do you want to keep your custom domain?

I would like to keep the domain name. I would also like to know if I have to change the links of all the posts that I have shared on social media. Will my users be directed towards the free site directly ?

Would you please explain regarding the media storage?

    Hi acraftyhomemaker,

Just to clarify — do you want to move acraftyhomemaker.com over to WordPress.com and use a free address containing “.wordpress.com” rather than the existing domain (acraftyhomemaker.com)?

Would you please explain regarding the media storage?

Storage space refers to the amount of images and files that can uploaded to the Media Library on WordPress.com — posts and pages don’t come out of this allowance though.

The free plan includes 3GB but if you have more media than this, you’ll need to upgrade to a paid plan in order to have enough space.

    Hi
I need the same domain name with a free address so I think my blog will be moved to acraftyhomemaker.wordpress.com. I think for now, I will go with the free storage plan.

Once my blog contents get transferred to the free site, do I need to change my site details in the social media and amazon etc? Will I have to change my blog post addresses which I have previously published and is now available on Pinterest and Facebook ?

When is the last date of my existing blog as paid version?

  • Hi there,

Your site at http://www.acraftyhomemaker.com/ is not a WordPress.com site, and you’re not paying us anything for that site.

That site was built using the open source WordPress software found on WordPress.org, and you’re paying Bluehost.com for hosting that site. That site is listed in your WordPress.com account because you have the Jetpack plugin installed on it, but we have no actual control over your site.

If you want to change that into a free WordPress.com site you can, though:

    1. Create a new free WordPress.com site at https://wordpress.com/start/site/
    2. Go to acraftyhomemaker.com/wp-admin ->Tools ->Export, and get an export file of your content on that site.
    3. On your new WordPress.com site, go to My Site ->Import and click on the WordPress.com option, and upload the file to import your content.
    4. Once that’s done, let us know and we can move over any followers and site stats you have through the Jetpack plugin.
    5. Once everything that should be has been moved over, you can cancel your hosting account with Bluehost.

Note that if you want to continue using the custom domain, acraftyhomemaker.com, you’ll need a paid plan on WordPress.com to do so.

Can you please tell me the paid plan on WordPress if I want to keep the domain name acraftyhomemaker.com

  • You can use that domain on any of our Personal, Premium or Business Plans. Each plan allows you to register or transfer one domain for free (from the second year onwards the domain renews at an additional cost to the plan), and you can connect an unlimited number of domains you own elsewhere to your site with us on all our plans.

So there are two ways you can keep using that domain – keep it registered at Bluehost and just connect it here (completely free as long as you have a paid plan on the WordPress.com site, but you’ll need to keep paying Bluehost to renew it each year).

Or you can transfer the registration with us, which will give you one domain renewal free as part of the transfer, and going forward you pay us to renew the domain each year.

How much will it cost for an year

  • The cost will depend on the plan you choose. You can see the cost of the various plans at My Site ->Plans, or at the link Gemma provided earlier in her reply:

    https://wordpress.com/pricing/

The renewal cost of the domain depends on the specific domain extension. For a .com domain that is currently $18 a year.

If I choose a free plan Of WordPress and continue my same domain name by paying on Bluehost, is it possible to use in this way?

  • Hi there,

No. In order to use a domain on WordPress.com, you need to get one of our paid plans.

Can I transfer my existing domain from Bluehost to WordPress and opt for a personal WordPress account? So that will cost me 48$ for a year + 18$ for the domain making it a total of 66$ for an year

  • Yes, you can transfer your domain on WordPress.com and if you select the Personal plan it will cost you $48 for the first year (free domain for the first year) and $66 the coming years.

Hi. I would like to continue the domain from Bluehost but want to transfer the hosting to WordPress. So how do I proceed with this. Should I first create a WordPress personal account and then import the data and after that should I cancel Bluehost subscription?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, you can follow the steps @kokkieh outlined above:
