cookie banner
-
Hi, I have tried to add a cookie banner to my blog, to make it GDPR/CCPA compliant, but I could not find a way. As a consequence I was forced to make it private, in order to prevent fines. Is there a way to add a cookie banner?
Thank you
Veronica

Who is fining you?
And in the same vein, who is reporting you?I’m not trying to be snarky, I am genuinely curious how this whole thing works.

Hi @garnant – Here is two different ways to add Cookies and Consent banner to your website:
- As a widget: https://wordpress.com/support/widgets/cookie-widget/
- As a block: https://wordpress.com/support/cookie-consent-block/
Give those a try and let us know if you have any questions as you go. We will be here to help.

Thank you deancroyal, apparently you need a business plan to add the widget, same applies to adding blocks to the theme (also the cookie consent block only allows the user to consent, while the law also requires a refuse button)

Hi there, @garnant!
Your site is on the free plan so the banner is applied automatically to your site. You are not currently seeing it because your site is set to Private. The banner can not be customized on the free plan and the widget and block mentioned above are not available on the free plan. You can upgrade your plan to use those. Here is more about the banner that is added:
The Cookies & Consents Banner widget adds a banner to your site that prompts your site’s visitors to consent to the tracking cookies used to display advertisements targeted to their interests via our WordAds program, among other things. 💡 Themes that support the Site Editor do not use widgets, so you won’t see Appearance → Widgets in your dashboard. Instead, you can search for a CookOn sites with paid plans, you can customize the banner to fit your needs and include your own privacy disclosures by adding the Cookies & Consents widget as explained here. This can be useful for following the EU Global Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or other local laws.
If this doesn’t fit your needs and you need more control and customization options, you should instead upgrade to the Business plan so that you can use a Cookies & Consents Banner plugin.
Let me know if you have any questions.
