Cookie banner won't go away :(

Are you speaking of this?
But (I’m sorry, still have to mention that) the point is, a blogger in Europe needs a cookies & consent text in his own language.
And I can’t find any possibility, to translate the given text and to insert a link, like it was possible at the widget cookies & consent. The text of the cookie banner is translateable at https://translate.wordpress.com/ like all other strings in WordPress.com. If a translation for your language is not available yet you’re welcome to contribute one, and once a validator for your language approves the translation it will start appearing on sites using that language.
The only cookies used on free sites for which consent must be obtained are the tracking cookies we place for targeted advertising to site visitors. That is why the banner links to our cookie policy at https://automattic.com/cookies. It is not possible to have that banner link anywhere else.

@kokkieh: yes, it is this.
Do I understand correct, that I can’t translate the given text in the given banner directly, but have to translate it at the site you mention?
Sorry, but that does not make any sense to me… is there really no possibility, to translate that given text, like it was possible with the cookies & consent banner text? -
Translating the cookie banner is only half of what we need, though. We also need the link to point at our own privacy policy. I really don’t get why your developers are struggling with this for such a long time, to be honest, and I’m seriously considering a transfer of my site to my own server.

PS: Why not insert an additional link into the banner? Keep the one for your advertising/tracking stuff, but add one that’s adaptable for the user’s own PP.
Currently, you’re keeping the lawyers off your own back by linking to your stuff — to the detriment of the actual user who cannot point to his own PP and is therefore risking legal trouble.

It is not possible to add custom text to that banner, so you cannot make a translation specific to your site. That banner is there to get consent for cookies WordPress.com places, and if you add your own text to it, you might remove text that must be there for the sake of WordPress.com’s own compliance with the GDPR, and we cannot allow that.
We also need the link to point at our own privacy policy.
That banner is to obtain consent for cookies WordPress.com places in the browsers of visitors to your site. It is not intended for use for a general notice regarding the privacy policy on your site. If you have a free site, please add a link to your privacy policy to your site menu or in a widget instead.
If you are on a paid plan where WordPress.com does not display ads on your site, then our default banner is not necessary. Then you can use the custom banner added via the widget to add whatever information you feel is required.

@leavingorbit: Your bannertext is in German. How did you made that? Can you explain me that, please?
-
@leavingorbit: the text in your default banner is in German. So it _is_ possible to translate that given text. Can you please explain me, how you made that?
-
Years ago, somewhere in my dashboard (“Settings”?), I set the language of my blog to “German”. I guess the banner text was adapted accordingly.
I have now started to transfer my content to my own server, though. Kokkieh’s last answer here is a clear indication that people with a free plan will not be able to point their visitors to their own PP in the foreseeable future.

Please don’t deliberately misrepresent what I said. Nothing is preventing you from publishing a privacy policy on your site and linking to it in your menu, the widget areas on your site, or even the content of other posts and pages.
But the default cookie banner that shows on free WordPress.com sites are there for WordPress.com’s own compliance with the GDPR, not yours, and you cannot have that banner link to your own privacy policy.

As the original issue in this thread regarding the banner not being dismissible has since been fixed, I’m closing this thread to new replies.
If anyone run into any other issues with the cookie banner, or have other questions regarding the GDPR that is not covered by our support page at http://en.support.wordpress.com/automattic-gdpr/, please create a new thread.
