cookie consent 2022

If I understand it correctly, according to new regulations, it is now mandatory to enable visitor to disable cookies (other than essential) and still be able to see the website. It is not enough to just inform them that the site is using cookies.
I have personal plan and I am using the build in wordpress cookie widget which only informs the visitor that the website is using cookies without the possibility to disable some types of cookies. So my question is how can I get the proper cookie consent banner to my website for free (without upgrading to premium plan). And not only to get the consent but actually disabling the collection of cookies if the visitor doesnt allow them.
Is there a plan to update the built in wordpress widget so that it meets all privacy/GDPR reguirements? Or what can I use instead?

At present, the Cookie & Consents Banner used on WordPress.com is compliant with the GDPR legislation of the European Union.
For any other additional features that are not covered by the banner (like giving an option for users to choose specific cookies), you will require a plugin and hence upgrade to a Business plan.

It may be GDPR compliant which is fine, but it does not meet the reguirements of the so called ePrivacy Regulation which deals specificaly with the cookie consents and management. It would be nice if wordpress could update the cookie banner according to this policy. Any plans for doing this in near future?

Unless you have WordAds activated on your site, we only set cookies to provide basic site stats and other core functionality. If you need more granularity on your site, or to otherwise add more functionality to your banner, there are GDPR and other compliance plugins available that can be used on a Business plan.
