Cookie notice does not go away (again)

    [ WordPress has apparently fixed identical bug(s) in the past. Looks like it needs fixing again. ]

    Until yesterday, the cookie notice that WordPress automatically places on free sites would show up as a pop-up at the foot of the page, and clicking on the “accept and close” button worked PROPERLY. Clicking the button would cause the notice to close.

    Starting yesterday, two things changed:

    (1) The cookie notice now shows up somehow embedded like a footer at the bottom of the site page (not as a pop-up overlaying the bottom of the window), and it includes far too much empty margin space around it This means it creates substantial dead space at the bottom of the page. Looks UGLY.

    (2) The bigger problem is that when you click on the “Accept and Close” button, the cookie notice does NOT DISAPPEAR. The notice remains at the bottom of every page of the site. Repeated clicking of the button does nothing.

    Solutions I’ve tried:
    – I changed the theme to other themes, including standard WordPress themes like the 2020 theme. Didn’t fix it.
    – I tried removing my custom background picture (one of the only things I can customize). Didn’t fix it.
    – Looked for any cookie notice settings in the WordPress settings panels. I don’t see any settings relating to the cookie notice.

    What this means:
    Something seems to have recently changed either with (a) the cookie notice widget software, or (b) the underlying WordPress software itself. This is a free WordPress site, so I have no control over the widget.

    My question:
    What can be done about this problem? Thank you for any ideas or suggestions!

    [ Fyi, I’m using the Afterlight theme on a free WordPress website (e.g., site-name.wordpress.com). However, the behavior is not limited to that theme. ]

    This seems to be a bug, but our developers are already working on it, so everything should go back to normal shortly.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the speedy attention to this … however, I’m not seeing any different behavior on my site. Do I need to do something to “update” my version of WordPress or the cookie widget? I’m not sure how to do that on my free WordPress site.

    Hey there @beekat3 I’m asking our team to confirm that the fix has gone into production… I also see no change either.

    For now nothing that you need to change on your end, the fix has to come from our side it seems. we’ll update you here as soon as we have an update. Thanks for your patience!

    Just wanted to report that it looks like the problem has been fixed today! The old style of cookie notice popup is now appearing, and after clicking the “Close & Accept” button, the notice goes away and does not return. All looks good.
