Cookie notice is not showing

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, On one of my (free) websites the cookie notice is not showing up. I checked all settings, but there is no difference between this and my other sites. Until the problem is solved I hide the blog. Can you please activate the cookie notice? Best wishes #modlook

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi macmanx, Thank you for your reply. The blog was launched (for several years). I changed the setting from “live” to “not yet launched” because the cookie notice does not appear anymore. I don’t want the blog to be visible as long as the problem is not solved (GDPR). The settings of this blog and of all my other sites are the same (as far as I can see), thus, I really do not know why the cookie notice works for all other sites but not for this blog. There was a cookie notice, which was a widget (before the widgets became block widgets). However, now I cannot activate any cookie notice. On all other blogs the cookie notice appears automatically, but not on this. Thanks in advance and best wishes #modlook

  • Hi @michaelaschreibt,

Looking at Appearance → Widgets, I’m not seeing a Cookie & Consent Banner Widget — have you tried adding it back and making your site public again?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi metabreakr, Thank you for your answer. Yes, I also tried to include a cookie widget, but there is none. However, on my other sites (e.g., michaelaschreibt.wordpress.com), there is no cookie widget included, but the cookie notice appears automatically. This is in line with “The privacy banner will automatically display on sites utilizing our no-cost hosting plan, since they display advertisements in order to keep that part of the service free” from https://wordpress.com/support/cookie-widget/ the link you sent. Only for one site/blog this automatic cookie notice does not work and I cannot see why. Best wishes #modlook

You’ll need to make your site publicly available again in order for us to troubleshoot this issue. Once we can test what the general public sees, we’ll be better able to advise.

Additionally, you don’t need to keep tagging #modlook to these threads – since Staff is responding to you, we will get your replies regardless.

    Thanks.

Hi csonnek, Thank you for your answer. I made the blog public. Would you please make the cookie notice appear. Thanks in advance!

  • Hi there,

The automatic cookie banner only shows (and is only needed) if ads are being displayed on your site, as that banner is specifically to get permission from site visitors to use tracking cookies to serve targeted ads to them.

Similarly, the cookie widget is only available, and only necessary, if you’re using WordAds on our Premium Plan or higher, as it also just gets permission for advertising cookies.

I see your site belongs to another account, michaelhbmath, and that account used to own a Premium Plan at one point, which removed ads from the site. The plan was later removed, but it looks like ads were never re-enabled, and I’ve confirmed we’re not displaying any ads on your site, so it’s expected that the banner isn’t visible on your site.

If you’d prefer to have the banner there I can re-enable ads on your site, but then you’ll need to buy a paid plan should you want to remove them again in future.

Other cookies set on your visitors’ browsers by your site are necessary for WordPress.com to work, and as such we don’t need explicit permission for them and they can’t be disabled, so there’s no banner for those. It’s still a good idea in general to make your visitors aware of these cookies, but a privacy policy page is better than a banner for this.

Hi kokkieh, Thanks a lot for your quick reply. I have got two questions: 1.) Is it possible for me to include a banner (like the cookie banner) where I can add a free text (such as: Note that this site uses necessary cookies only.) with a OK button so that everyone has to read this (when she or he wants the banner to disappear)? 2.) Did I understand you correctly that this blog uses technically necessary cookies only? Best wishes

  • 1.) Is it possible for me to include a banner (like the cookie banner) where I can add a free text (such as: Note that this site uses necessary cookies only.) with a OK button so that everyone has to read this (when she or he wants the banner to disappear)?

You’d need to use a plugin on our Business Plan to add a banner like that to your site. The closest you can get on a free site is to manually add a notice to the actual content of every post or page, and it will a permanent part of the content, i.e. not dismissable.

2.) Did I understand you correctly that this blog uses technically necessary cookies only?

If your site doesn’t display ads, all the remaining cookies are there so we’re able to provide our service to you, yes. Our cookie policy I linked to above explains the specific cookies your site uses in detail.

Hi kokkieh, In that case I ask you to switch back to the normal advertising in the blog, so that users can see the normal cookie banner and decide for themselves which cookies they want. Thanks!

@michaelaschreibt Can you make your site public again? We can’t see if changing those settings is working on our end unless your site is public.

    Thanks!

Hi csonnek, Thank you again. I made the blog public. Would you please make the cookie notice appear. Thanks in advance!

  • Hmm, I think we’re almost there.

It almost seems the system doesn’t think you’ve fully launched yet. Would you be willing to set the site to fully public, or do you need to always discourage search engines from visiting the site?

Hi supernovia, I made the blog fully public. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for that – that seems to have been the issue as I can now see your cookie notice showing on that page:

You should be all set. Let us know if you have any other questions.

Dear csonnek and all the other staff members,
thank you very much for solving the problem!
