Copy and paste in and out of WordPress
-
I have had an ongoing issue ever since WordPress introduced the site editor. I was an early adaptor because I like to embrace new technology.
The problem is I have well established writing process. I write a post in a word processing program. If it’s short, I use Grammerly to help me fix any issues.
If it is longer I send it to friends via email.
What happens is the formatting is all wonky every time I copy and paste and I have to spend time reformatting before I can edit.
I would love to compose in wordpress because I access it from anywhere and I have never lost work on it. But then I can’t paste into Grammarly. It used to be when I pasted back to the Word Press it pasted into a single block. They say it will divide into paragraph blocks. I have not tried it.
Any one else experience these issues or am I alone? Is there a way to plug in Gramarly?

Hi there,
Yes this is an issue that any HTML-based editor faces (WordPress, Squarespace, Wix, etc.) in that Word adds a lot of invisible formatting that works great for print projects, but causes all kinds of conflicts and strange issues when pasted into a website editor.
There are a few workarounds here that will help you to preserve your current workflow:
- I noticed you use a Mac. With this in mind you can try to CMD+SHIFT+V keyboard command to paste your text. This typically will paste the text only with no styling info
- You can use the Classic Block to paste all your text into, using the Paste as Plain Text option then once the text is added to the block, you have the option to convert the Classic block into native editor blocks and then continue with the full layout and formatting options of the block editor
- Pasting from Word to an intermediate app. You can past text into Grammarly, Text Edit, Google Doc, etc. This will usually sanitize the formatting from Word and then you can paste into the WordPress editor as normal
It used to be when I pasted back to the Word Press it pasted into a single block. They say it will divide into paragraph blocks. I have not tried it.
Was this your experience from some time ago? Typically if the text is correctly formatted to have a double space between paragraphs that should be respected within the WordPress editor as well. I have not seen the issue of having all pasted text in a single block but if you run into this issue you can let us know and we will take a closer look.

Thank you for the reply. I have not used Word in over 20 years. Probably more. I don’t know any other way to paste than command-shift-V in any program.
The biggest issue is pasting from WordPress into Grammerly. It pastes with the words stacked. I have to paste it into Pages, reformat, copy and paste into Grammerly. Each time I copy paste, could cause mistakes or data loss.Basically I have to live with with it. Now I I stand why a lot of my friends ask why I use WordPress.
