Copy-paste loses formatting…

apologies if this has probably been posted numerous times but how can I get around the problem… my blog is predominantly poetry which I write in a word document then copy and paste into the blog ‘new post’ function…but when I paste it, it appears double spaced so I have to re-edit to remove the extra line spacing and close everything up.. any ideas please and ta?

All MS Word formatting is stripped out by wordpress since MS Word is not a web application and brings in junk code that can severely mess up blogs. MS Word is a print media application.

The double lines after pasting can be gotten rid of by going to settings > writing and selection “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” and then click save. From then on if you paste from word and there is double spacing, simply switch from the visual tag to the HTML tab and then back again and the extra line spaces will disappear.

If you want no spaces between lines, such as within stanzas, press and hold shift and then press return/enter. For normal spacing (blank line) such as the end of a stanza, press return by itself.

Generally you are going to have to format poetry from within the wordpress editor.

Here is a link to a support document on MS Word.

@TT, thanks for posting that link. I didn’t even know that was there.

You’re welcome. There’s always something new popping up isn’t there? It makes each exciting. ;)

Well thanks for the responses, much appreciated for your time…but not really what I wanted :(

I was hoping for a magical fix that would allow me to paste straight from word and be ready for publishing. I already do the stuff you have pointed to above and it’s all just a bit irksome especially as I’m prone to writing longer poems. Perhaps I shall have to just stick to haiku :)

    Thanks again anyway :)

    He’s just spamming, ignore him.

I, also, did not know there was a “format poetry” support doc. I just always recommend Windows Live Writer, which works like Word but doesn’t risk screwing up your blog.

@redroom10 – the “is that true” is spam – they want you to click on the Affiliate Catalog link – they however collect bad Karma when they Spam the Support Forum.
