Copy post fails to save
-
I have a template post I use to create a monthly newsletter. My process is to make a few changes to the template, and save it as a draft, then select “copy” under the post, change the title, edit various things in it and save. I do this every month and it has been working fine for numerous years.
This month, I copy the post and it opens in the new editor instead of the classic editor and when I try to save as draft, without even making any changes at all, it tells me:-
“Updating failed. Sorry, you are not allowed to edit this post.”
Yet, if I were to edit the template I would be allowed (since I have done that just before hand).
The template post is owned by the user id that owns the blog site, my user id is an editor. I am allowed to edit posts owned by the user id that owns the blog site. Why am I not allowed to even save a copy of a post that I am allowed to edit?
If I do a quick edit and change the blog post id to be mine before making the copy it also fails with the same message. So my theory that it was because of different IDs is clearly no correct!
So, what’s going on – why is copy now completely un-usable? I can’t believe no-one else has noticed this, so it must be something specific to my setup.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

We’re working on a fix for this, but for now some folks have been able to fix it themselves by either clearing their browser’s cache or logging out and back in again.

Thanks for the update – sorry I didn’t find any reports of it before posting my question. I guess other people have noticed then! :-)
I copied and pasted a new blog post from my template to work around it this month. I will try again next month.
btw – is there a way to do a “Copy” of a post and have it open in Classic Editor. I do not wish to use the new editor.

I’m afraid we’re retiring the Classic Editor so, although you might still be able to use it from WP-admin for now, we strongly recommend using the Block one.
Here are some documents that may help you with the change:

I always edit in HTML anyway, so I guess it won’t make any difference which one I use. I also always edit from wp-admin – didn’t know there was another way! :-)
When I edit from wp-admin, it always comes up in the HTML edit view – I can’t remember if this is because I have at some point in the past set this as the default, or whether it just uses the last view that you picked? Can I set, or does the new editor remember, my default choice of edit view too.?

You are correct that in the classic editor your settings (from a previous session) are remembered. So that if you switched to the HTML view a long time ago, it’s likely you never needed to pick that option again.
In our block editor the default view is blocks, so there is not an HTML option specifically.
Instead you can add the “Custom HTML Block” which allows you to author HTML directly within the block editor. More info on the custom HTML block here: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/custom-html-block/
Hope this helps!

Hmm, that’s odd – I was just going to use the “Edit as HTML” option. What are the differences? Why should I use the “Custom HTML Block” rather than “Edit as HTML”? I’m sure it’s clear to you, but this new editor is somewhat of a mystery to me – I just need to be able to edit HTML. Nothing else.
Is there somewhere we can make requests – mine would be, please allow me to set a default so I don’t have several clicks to get into HTML (as I don’t today).

The “edit as HTML” option in the block editor isn’t intended as a way to write your posts in plain HTML. Rather, it was added as a tool to allow content creators to debug issues with block markup, and maybe add HTML attributes for which the block settings don’t have an option in the UI itself yet.
If you try to just write your post in HTML mode using plain HTML code, it won’t work as expected – the moment you switch to visual, or save/publish/update your content, the editor will try to add block markup to the HTML you’ve already added, which can end up breaking your post’s formatting.
The HTML block was created in part for people like you who prefer to write their content in HTML, so that’s the best option to use in this case.
It’s not possible to make the HTML block the default, but when you open the editor, just type
/htmland select the block, then you can continue writing your content in that block, in the Visual view of the editor. -
Is the original problem reported in this thread fixed yet? One month on and I am on the next months newsletter so copying a post again – failed in the same way. Will just use the same work-around as last month, but would like to know whether I should still be seeing the problem or not?
Cheers,
