Copy Right

I think WordPress should add a copyright notice under each blog/webpage. I post alot of important information and i dont want it to get stolen or copyied

So put a copyright disclaimer in a text widget on your sidebar. Alternatively put a copyright notice at the end of each post.

    http://billsticker.wordpress.com/ already does this.

That will establish your assertion of copyright, but it won’t prevent theft. It will just make it easier if you have to fight somebody later. As WordPress is under US law, all orginal content is copyright the blog owners anyway, but a copyright notice just makes it that much clearer.

what other copyright disclaimer sites would anyone recommend? so far i only know of copyscape and creative commons

Hey there you lazybones – why not do a search and let us all know the results you turn up? In other words, there’s no way I’m doing this search for you *lol* Copyright law is country by country in its application and the use of a copyright notice is no longer required under U.S. law.

But because all these blog posts are published on WordPress, which is hosted in the United States, I believe American laws apply; at least, that’s what Dr. Mike said in the MP3 thread when I pointed out the difference between US and Canadian laws.

Check the TOS: if memory doesn’t fail, it’s in there.

timet: cos if anyone knows a good one by name i’d go search for it then. if someone recommends something means it ought to be better than if i search it myself, not knowing which are good or not.

You’re right on rain. That’s what drmike said and I recall you pointing out the Canuck difference.

    Right as rain? :)

As I understand copyright law (and, being as host and ‘author’, I’ve had the pleasure of going through that crud a few times) it’s where the servers reside is where it comes down to. Another example is those file sharing Swedish servers that fall under their country’s law and not US law.

But I’m not an attorney nor do I practice law so don’t listen to me. :)

Best answer I can give is if you don’t want it copied, don’t post it. I hate to say it but that’s the only way to be sure. We now have about a dozen threads here where folks have discovered their works copied elsewhere and there are too many hosts out there who don’t give a *cough* about stuff like that since they know that they can get away with it. It takes too much time and energy to file a suit, especially when it’s occuring in another country.

edit: Link to teh search to see some of the older threads in case anyoen is interested. Some of them contain links elsewhere on the subject.

    Hope this helps,
    -drmike
