Copying Galleries with photos between blogs

  • Unknown's avatar

I want to transfer some Galleries with pictures from one blog to another. When I have tried this before the Galleries were transferred but without the pictures. Please help

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there – The trick is that for a gallery to work, the photos in it must be attached to the post that the gallery is in. Look in the Media Library, and make sure that the ‘Attached to’ column for those images shows the post title that the gallery is in. If it says ‘unattached’ you can click that and attach them from there.

If it shows them as attached to a different post, you’ll have to edit the post you want the gallery in, and upload the images again to that post.

    Does this clear things up?

    Hi eurello,
Images in a gallery no longer must be attached to the post the gallery is displayed on. One can choose any picture from the media library to include in a gallery.
If the OP is talking about moving a gallery from one blog to another, and not from one post to another in one blog, then he or she must upload the pictures to the media library of the second blog in order for them to be included in a gallery there.

@eurello- So we can’t simply select random images any longer from the Media Manager when creating a Gallery?

@thewiltshiregc – 1tess is right. You can’t share Gallery images between WordPress.com sites. In order to create a Gallery, the images have to be uploaded to each site separately. The same is true for “featured images.”

    @jen,
No, we can still choose random images from the media library! I just did so in a test blog because I thought wp.com was going through some backwards progress!!!

  • Unknown's avatar

@tess- Now *that* would be an oxymoron. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

    LOL!

  • Hi Tess – Facepalm. Thanks very much, you’re right. :P

    Onwards!

Thanks to all for their help. I guess the answer is that I cannot move or copy a gallery with its’ photos between Blogs and I have to recreate the Gallery and re-import the photos in the other Blog?

  • You can export the post with the gallery from the first blog (you can narrow the date range to that month):
    Export

Then, if you import it into the second blog and check the ‘include file attachments’ link, the media files attached to those posts will come over as well as the post content, and your gallery should still function.

@eurello-when we upload media, WordPress assigns a media attachment number and when included in a gallery, those ID #s are included there. Has WP changed so that the media ID numbers stay the same even when exporting from one site and importing to a different site? If so, that’s a major step up from a while back. Excelsior!

But, sadly, so far it has been my experience that one will encounter fewer troubles by simply uploading the same photos to the other site and recreating the galleries in the copied or new post.

I’d be very happy to hear if this is no longer necessary.

  • Hi Jen – When I tested this, the post with the attached images came over, and the images had the same IDs as they did on the original site, but with the new site’s URL. So they worked in the gallery and their IDs there matched their IDs in the new Media Gallery.

So, at least based on my testing today, this seems to work now. :)

THAT is very good news. Thanks for letting us know.

OK-after testing this myself just now, the caveat is that in order to be ported over to the second site, the Gallery images must be uploaded to the post they appear in (i.e. attached to that post). Any Gallery images inserted from the Media Library that was not uploaded and attached to the relevant post are not ported over.

Any single images inserted in the exported post were hotlinked to the first site where they were uploaded.

    Getting there!

  • Oh, yes. Thanks for clarifying that!

Thank you all. I tried importing galleries and it worked very well. I now have a number of pages with galleries in both my main Blog and my “Archive” Blog. My next step would be to delete the pages from my main blog. However I am nervous that if I do that I may lose the copy in my Archives Blog. I believe that this may have happened last time that I tried this. I am sure I had the Galleries with pictures in both blogs. However after I deleted the pages with the galleries from my main blog the pictures disappeared form the galleries in my Archive Blog, the Pages/Galleries were still there but the pictures were not. I had to retrieve them all from my Media library

I thought that I would create a Test gallery with pictures in my main Blog, copy it to my Archive Blog then delete from the Main Blog. However when I tried that I find that I can no longer export pages with galleries, only the blank page comes across. This is very strange??

You may have noticed in my reply to eurello that any image included in a Gallery but which wasn’t uploaded to the post it appears in didn’t come across to my test site’s post.

The other thing is the hotlinking of single images, i.e. those not used in the Gallery feature. What that means is that the image stays on the main site, and the new blog post is actually calling up and displaying the image from the main site. So if you delete it on the main site, it’s gone everywhere.

But more importantly, assuming that you already have all the images you uploaded to your site on your computer, you do know that you can create a “backup” file of your entire site from the same Export tool. You can keep that in a safe place on your computer or in the Cloud somewhere.

As far as your difficulties exporting pages with Galleries, that is most unusual. Do you get an error? Have you tried clearing your browser cache and cookies first?

  • Hi @thewiltshiregc – Can you please explain a bit what your ultimate goal is with moving these galleries between blogs? Are you trying to create a second blog as a backup?

If I understood what you’re ultimately trying to do, I might have a better way to advise you. :)

Hi Eurello, It is very good of you to try and help me. I have a blog which serves as the web site for members of my golf club http://wgccgolfersnotices.wordpress.com/clubnews/ It has current news and photographs. At the end of each year I like to clear out prior years stuff, including photo galleries to an “Archives” Blog http://wgccgolfersarchive.wordpress.com/. When I have copied/moved things to the Archive Blog, I delete the pages from the main Blog.

When I did this last year all looked OK until I deleted the original pages from my main Blog. Whilst the text pages I had transferred were OK, the Galleries had lost their photos. I have no problems with you looking at my Blogs, they are “open” You will see that I have copied across a lot of 2013 stuff already. However I have not deleted them from my original Blog as I am afraid the photos will they disappear.

    Thanks a lot

    Regards

    Ray Smith

  • Hi Ray,

I’m curious why you want to move your older posts to a second blog? You could simply leave them where they are. Certainly, you’re welcome to do as you choose, but it seems like a great deal of extra work for you.

The thing to understand is that every image that appears on a blog has to be stored in that blog’s Media Library. If the image is in the post, but you delete it from the Media Library, it won’t appear in the post — you’ll get a broken image.

With galleries, before you export them, check to see that the images in the particular gallery are “attached” to the post they appear in. You can check that by going to the Media Library and finding the particular images. Then, in the Attached To column by that image, it should have the post title of the post the gallery is in.

If those images are attached to the post with the gallery they’re shown in, you should be able to export the post with all the images attached and import it with its images, and all will be fine.

If the images are not attached to the post in the original blog, however, they still appear there, because they are still in the Media Library (but just not attached to that post). But if you export the post, they won’t come with it. So on the new blog, those images aren’t in its Media Library and they won’t appear.

Does that clear things up a bit? If not, or if you still have problems with a particular page or post, please link me directly to the page or post you’re trying to work with, and let me know specifically what’s happening.
