Copying Galleries with photos between blogs

Thank you, I will check my image files and try again. The reason I need to move pages to the “archive” is that if I leave them the main Blog gets very clogged up and the side bar menu very long

  • Hi Ray,

The theme you are using, Ocean Mist, is retired so it doesn’t support some of our newer features. I’d suggest upgrading to a more recent theme, because then you could use a Custom Menu to organize your pages. That way, you wouldn’t have to have the default all-page display.

You could, for example, create a dropdown menu for each year, and then organize that year’s pages underneath it, so that they were still easy to find, but not cluttering up your sidebar.

If you’d like to try that, here are some suggested themes similar to the one you’re using:

And here is a guide on how to set up a Custom Menu, and all the various things you can do with one:

Hi Eurello, Thanks for taking the time to look at my Blogs. I will certainly try what you suggest. I will let you know how I get on

Dear Eurello, I did what you recommended and it works a treat, using Misty-Lake. Thanks again.

It works fine now, I have got rid of the Contents Widget but I still have a side bar with things like “Archives” and “Meta” boxes. Can I get rid of these so my Blog page can use the whole screen.

    Regards

    Ray

Every theme has a “default sidebar display” which does not contain actual widgets. The first time you move a single widget in any theme here > Appearance > Widgets the “default display” which does not contain actual widgets will disappear.

Widgets now have “visibility” settings so we can select which pages they display on. See here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/#widget-visibility

Removing widgets or changing their visibility does not make the entire width of your theme available. In order to change the width of the content posting area on an existing theme, you would need to purchase the Custom Design Upgrade and change the CSS of the theme.

With so many, many themes available on WordPress.com, there surely is another one that suits your needs. Have a look here: http://theme.wordpress.com/

  • Hi Ray – Awesome, that looks much better!

And I see you’ve got your widgets straightened out. Misty Lake does have a full-width page template. To apply it to your home page so the sidebar doesn’t show, you’d first want to create a page (rather than a post) with your home page content, and assign the ‘full width’ page template:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/page-attributes/#template

Then, go to Settings->Reading in your Dashboard and choose that page as a static front page, as described here:
    Front Page

You can pick ‘Club News’ or some other page as your Blog page, which will show your latests posts, or you can just not choose any page for Blog.

Let me know how that works!

    Hi Eurello

Thanks for the tip. However now you have shown me the power of widgets I would rather leave them in the sidebar. I presume that if I went for a full width page I would lose the sidebar/widgets?

    Regards

Hi Eurella, it’s me again! Since making the changes to the site I do not seem to be able to view the changed site via my WordPress Ap on my Android phone. It still shows the old version of the site?

    Ray

  • Hi Ray,

You’ve got a few different sites with similar URLs — have you added http://wgccgolfersnotices.wordpress.com/ in particular to the app? Is it when you click ‘view site’ that you see the old one? If so, please try clearing the cache on your phone.

Note that your theme will automatically adjust its layout for the best display on smaller screens. When viewed on a mobile device, the widgets will appear at the bottom of the content, since it’s a narrower screen.

I presume that if I went for a full width page I would lose the sidebar/widgets?

Correct, the sidebar with widgets won’t display with a full-width template.

    Dear Eurello,

    Thanks again, all sorted.
