If you go to your Customizer, under the Site Identity tab, you can add the default options (your site name, and various versions of the WordPress brand), though this doesn’t add a copyright.
Under the Widgets tab, select “add a widget” then scroll all the way down to “Text” (the widget type list is alphabetical). You should be able to add your text in that Widget, which displays in the footer if the theme allows.
If these options are not available, or aren’t working as expected, you may have better luck posting in the Fortune Theme support forum, or contacting support staff directly via chat.
Best of luck!

Apologies – forgot to share a link. The Customizer can be found at https://wordpress.com/customize/.

This doesn’t really answer the OP’s question, which I also have. There should be a way to customize the footer using CSS – possibly even to update automatically each year. Can anyone help with this?
I realize that I can type the copyright text into the footer using a text widget, but where’s the fun in that (or the efficiency)?

Apologies for the delayed response. CSS alone isn’t smart enough to update automatically with the year. It’s meant for styling, not data.
It would take a modification to the theme itself to achieve this, which isn’t workable here on WordPress.com. On a self-hosted WordPress.org install it’s absolutely doable within a child theme.
The beauty of WordPress.com is its simplicity, especially for those who don’t know much (or want to know much) about servers, code, updates, and other topics that are necessary to run a self-hosted WordPress site.
