Copyright Rules and Ads
-
Hi!
So I am looking into copyrighting my blog to protect my content. I wanted to know if this would be permitted with my basic membership with WordPress.
I also would like to know how an upgraded account may cooperate with any advertising I do on my blog. I will be reviewing and recommending products with coupon affiliate links, etc. Will this be permitted with my basic account, or will I also have to upgrade for this, too?
Can you also please explain the different variants of making money from my blog on WordPress? I wasn’t able to gain a ton of clarity from the home page.
Thank you so much! -
Hi there,
So I am looking into copyrighting my blog to protect my content. I wanted to know if this would be permitted with my basic membership with WordPress.
In terms of dealing with potential issues of copyright infringement and content protection, our support pages provide information on dealing with both for a site hosted on WordPress.com:
https://wordpress.com/support/prevent-content-theft/
https://wordpress.com/support/copyright-infringement-what-to-do/I also would like to know how an upgraded account may cooperate with any advertising I do on my blog.
Policy on affiliate links have changed over the years, but here is the most recent policy:
We do allow sites to use affiliate links, in any form such as text or images. We also do allow sponsored post and paid for ads that are relevant to the content on your site.
However, we do not allow sites whose primary purpose is to drive traffic to external affiliate links or who promote their site or affiliate links through comment and forum spam. So, if we see a site with poor quality content and a whole bunch of Amazon affiliate images, for example, that would be considered spam – which is against our Terms of Service.
For information on what is and isn’t allowed, please visit our support page:
Although you can monetize your blog using affiliate text links, we do not allow affiliate links to the following types of sites:
- “Get Rich Quick”/Work from Home
- Multi-level marketing (MLM)
- Gambling
- Pornography
- Disreputable merchants and affiliate networks (ex. Clickbank)
For more information, please visit our support page:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/affiliate-links/We do have an advertising program called WordAds, which you can read more about here:
We also have an affiliate program that you can apply for:
Advertising from third-party ad networks like Google AdSense is not allowed. For full details, please see:

Can you also please explain the different variants of making money from my blog on WordPress?
As stated above, wordads is an official way to monetize your site on WordPress.com:
As you grow traffic on your site, you can generate income via the ads placed on your site.
Here is our support page on the various ways you can monetize your blog:
We also have a new recurring payment feature, where viewers can subscribe to your blog and contribute monthly/yearly payments to you:
