copyrights, licence and TOS again
-
I know this question/topic comes up a lot and is generally answered/dismissed quickly. But do I really keep all the rights to the stuff (my own text) I post on a blog on wordpress.com?
The reason I’m asking again is this answer to the same question from a user (who judging from his membership status seems to know what hes talking about)
I would contact staff directly on selling things from the blog just for their input. Since it is a non-profit, I doubt seriously that there would be any issues, but it is best to ask anyway.
Just explain it’s a non-profit, and let them know what you are going to be doing. As I said, I doubt there would be any issue.
Now that seems really strange to me. Why would he have to contact support „for their input“ on selling his own work? And why would he have to tell them its non-profit? Surely he can use his work for profit?
The fact alone that he would have to contact support surely seems like hes not in control of his own work anymore. Also I was wondering about a more specific scenario:
What if I deleted some content on my blog and instead sold the content as a book – would Automattic still hold the license to „reproduce, modify, adapt and publish“ said deleted content?
(for the purpose of promotion of my blog)Thanks for any thoughts.

selling things is a different part of the TOS
you grant WordPress.COM (Automattic) a license to display your content on WordPress.COM around the world – WP.COM does not retain any rights to your content once you remove it – if you publish a book of the contents of your blog – you do not owe WP.COM any royalties – you never transfer any copyright to WP.COM
-
Thanks, could you point me toward the part of the TOS about selling things?
I think the part of not transferring any rights is pretty clear.
But as you said I do grant a license to wordpress.com – the question is if that license ends as soon as I delete the content.
Or if wp.com could still display the content royalty free even if I decided to start using the content for profit only. -
the question is if that license ends as soon as I delete the content.
Ends when you remove your content
you can sell things you make yourself no problem – does not to my memory make any difference if it is for profit or not
see below for all the links I have on the TOS stuff
