Copywright and Quotes

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew whether this fell into fair use rules:

I am creating original content for blog posts, but for the header that I am creating follows pantone colors with a quote of a famous person (typically an architect) that relates in some manner, sort of as an intro or a way of broadening the value by relating it to masters in the field (typically contemporary masters from the last 100 years). The blog is pretty new and not commercialized, but I don’t want to rule that out as a possibility for the future. Is this acceptable?

    THANKS!

It would depend how long the quote is. You should be safe with something that is just a couple of sentences.

Yeah, I was thinking that might be the case – you see so many blogs and webpages rife with quotes I imagined that if that was something they were going to crack down on then it wouldn’t be so prevalent. But the legal talk about it was a little confusing. Thanks!

Any other opinions on this? I do want to get it right.

When using a quote, make sure to include the attribution.

Also, if you’re using any sort of image (graphic or photo) be aware that copyrights apply there too. If you don’t know who the original artist is to give credit, or whether there is a Creative Commons usage policy on it, my recommendation is to not use it.

Yes, you can use a brief quote. If you are a newcomer to blogging becoming familiar with copyright law is part of the territory. Copyright, Limitations of Fair Use and Plagiarism, Attribution, Citation, Quotation are critically important matters for new bloggers to comprehend so put that education the top of your to do list.
