Correct format for CNAME entries

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi
I have a custom WordPress domain purcahsed via WP, and I recently purchased an email service from Network Soutions (NS). I am trying to edit the WP DNS but the instructions seem to be conflicting. Here is an example of the info provided by NS for the first CNAME:

    mail.yourdomainname.ext.netsolmail.net – Alias: mail.yourdomainname.ext

This implies I should change it to this:

    mail.tonylockhart.com.netsolmail.net – Alias: mail.tonylockhart.com

I have two questions here: Is the above line correct, and, when I enter it into the WP DNS page, why does WP automatically add my domain name to the end of the entry so it ends up as this:

    mail.tonylockhart.com.netsolmail.net.tonylockhart.com

The above cannot be edited and seems even more wrong.

I am obviously missing something fundamental here. Can anyone give me an example of one correct entry line, I should then be able to do the rest myself.

I have asked NS for help but thay say it is a WP issue.

    Thanks in advance, Tony

  • Hi Tony –

Thanks for getting in touch. I can see you’ve got 4 CNAME additions to your DNS records on the domain.

Are these the instructions you’re following?

    Add Email to Your Domain

    Hi
Yes, they are the instructions, on the page headed – Add Email through other providers.

The issue is that when I enter the data, my domain name appears at the end and I cannot delete it.

  • Hi @unsettlinglife, actually it’s supposed to be the other way around.

You can only control the settings for your domain, which is why your domain gets added to everything in the name field.

You want mail at your domain to point to (or be aliased to) that other server.

So try entering just “mail” in the name field there (it will automatically add your domain on the end, as it should) and saying it’s an alias of mail.tonylockhart.com.netsolmail.net.

If that’s the only setting you need related to mail, save that and it should start working within a few hours. If you need to add txt records and need help with that, let us know.

    Hi Supernovia

Thank you kindly for your reply.
Taking your suggestions into account, have I got the settings in this image correct:

  • Your settings look fine now. Want to go ahead and give that a few hours to see if that will work for you?

    Hi Super
    Thanks for the reply.
I set it up last night but it’s not working yet (12 noon Wednesday), I am waiting for the USA to start work, not sure if it takes longer or they have to do something at their end.

    Forgot to add:
When I try to create the mailbox on the Network Solutions site, it says: No eligible domains in this account.

  • When I try to create the mailbox on the Network Solutions site, it says: No eligible domains in this account.

Can you check in with Network Solutions on that? It sounds like the settings here are correct but they need to expect the connection on that end, too.

    Hi
Thanks you for your help with this Liz and Supernovia.
The issue was resolved by a support agent having to create the mailbox for me using a very simple password. It turned out that the one I was trying to use caused the problem. I included a question mark, once it was removed it worked. A bit bizarre considering I have other servicves with NS which include a ? in the passwords. Nevertheless, all is now working. Thanks again.

  • Ahhhh how odd, and yet familiar — I had the same issue with my router once. Seems some password systems just can’t take questions. I’m glad you were able to resolve this!
