Correctly sizing a header

Hello. Brand new to WordPress and having problems trying to get the image correctly sized for my header. If you take a look at the blog page you will see what I mean. The jpg file is smaller than the required number of pixels but the theme will only let me put up a cropped image. Any help out there?

The header image section has fixed pixel dimensions, so the image you upload needs to be in those dimensions or the cropper comes into play to make it fit. If the image is larger, it gets cropped; if it’s smaller, it gets blown up as well as cropped, so it becomes pixellated. You need to use an image editing application to create a new version of your image in the exact pixel dimensions the theme specifies (990 x 180).
How did you create the image? What are its original dimensions?
