Corrupted Classic toolbar
-
Suddenly the Classic toolbar has lost most of its content. For example, it had lost the “More break” button. I had a longish conversation with the automatic customer service but it couldn’t understand how I could get back my old Classic toolbar, it suggested a solution that works but it is awfully clumsy.
Do any of you know what has happened and how I can get back the uncorrupted Classic?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, are you talking about the toolbar in the full Classic Editor or the Classic Block?
Here’s what I see in the full Classic Editor

And here’s what I see in the Classic Block

These screenshots are taken using Firefox latest version (updated 15 minutes ago) on a Win10Pro PC.
Have you tried logging out and clearing your browser cache or tried using a different browser to the one you normally use?

Did you try the suggestion of using a different browser or a private browsing window?
Are you using an ad blocker? Try disabling it to see if it isn’t causing the problem.
-
I have only one, a Firefox. It seems to be the only one I can have on my ten years old Mac Mini. But what is a pivate browsing window?
I don’t think I’m using an ad blocker since ads continue to show up.
-
Did you already try logging out and clearing your browser cache and cookies? This will also log you out of any other website where you are currently logged in. https://wordpress.com/support/browser-issues/
I don’t have a Mac, so can’t check, but in the Firefox File menu there is an option to open a New Private Window. If you are using a Mac, you can also try in Safari.

Perhaps your browser is outdated – https://www.whatismybrowser.com/
If your MacBook mini is still running a version of macOS from 2014-2015 (like Yosemite, OS X 10.10), the last supported version of Firefox was 78 ESR (Extended Support Release). The latest Firefox is version 145.

I was recommended this version of Firefox by a pårofessional, so I suppose it’s correct.

@justjennifer: I think I dare not try another browser since I have such an old computer, I don’t know how to find what is compatible… But where do you find the New Private Option, and what is it?

But where do you find the New Private Option, and what is it?
Here’s a link to the Mozilla support site that should help answer your questions: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/private-browsing-use-firefox-without-history

And what is the relevance for my problem? For the moment I don’t care about tracking, I’m interested in inserting a “Read more” tag.

I asked a professional, and he says that WordPress from time to other “update”, and quite arbitrarily decide to suppress some functions, of course without telling you. And you are left there, without the function or without access to what you have earlier built.
This Classic toolbar thing is not the first. I have a “Blogroll” I haven’t had access to for several years. And an association where I am a member has a website that recently lost its links to the back sides of the site.
I think this is reckless. If a certain function isn’t safe any longer, shouldn’t it be replaced with something else? Or should perhaps WordPress be replaced with something else? Or perhaps there isn’t any?

WordPress.com is only compatible with current versions of browsers – https://wordpress.com/support/browser-issues/
So it’s up to you to keep your systeem up-to-date. If you still are using an outdated and also unsafe system, well that’s your choice.

@wiklundsjanne which site are you working on?
I just noticed that the site you linked to in your first post was last posted to in 2020 and is using a theme that was retired.
I also noticed that you previously asked in our forums about the site alternativstad.nu which is not hosted on the WordPress.com platform, but using the open source WordPress software and supported at the ORG community forums (as was mentioned in that other forum thread).
And what is the relevance for my problem? For the moment I don’t care about tracking, I’m interested in inserting a “Read more” tag.
Also, just to address the issue of using a Private browsing window, it prevents any browser add-ons you installed from interfering with page loading. Nothing to do with tracking.

When I look I see nothing about version except that possibly 115.31.0esr tells something about that. It only states that it is “updated”.
-
Hello again, Regarding the old Links/Blogroll Widget, it was retired a long time ago and is no longer supported. Staff have suggested using a List block as a replacement.
As far as the Classic toolbar, I hope you’ve been able to resolve this since your last post, but here is what it says on the Firefox support page about version 115.31.0 ESR
Version 115.31.0, first offered to ESR channel users on December 9, 2025
Firefox ESR 115 is now supported only on Windows 7-8.1 and macOS 10.12-10.14. Users on other operating systems should use Firefox ESR 128 instead.
As @staartmees mentioned WordPress.com works best with modern browsers. If your OS and browser are out of date, then there’s really nothing we can do to help on this end. Best wishes.
