Corrupted HTML whenever update is pressed

  I tried out my standard WordPress theme using XAMPP on my localhost and all worked well.
  I have since installed WP on our server and did a clean install.
  Whenever I update a post or try inserting an image and I press the update button it inserts a series of (backslashes) into the post resulting in nothing being displayed. The more I press “update’ the more it inserts \ ‘s whether I am in HTML or visual editor.

  I am truly stumped. Anybody come across this before or have a resolution ?
