Millions of people have free sites here. There is a free option as long as you choose a subdomain ending in .blog or .wordpress.com. If you require a custom domain then you need a paid plan.

This wasnt particularly clear. It says my domain is leveraging .wordpress.com but I had to pay with my cc, so am i paying for something that should be free?

https://leveraging.wordpress.com/ was created in 2007 so that can’t be your site. If you purchased some other site you’ve purchased a Personal plan where you can add a custom domain if you haven’t already and you’ll have the benefit of no ads displaying (which can get annoying for free site users). I could not get past the page where I had to pay $4 a month to create it. There did not seem to be a way to proceed at all. If I understand you correctly, I could build a blog on this site that has adds or pay the 4$ a month for no adds. That makes perfect sense, it was just completely unclear during the set up process.
