  I don’t know if I am ready to commit my business to a company I haven’t tried and I would prefer to know what I am committing my site to before I get a domain through these guys. Is there a free trial to the personal plan?

  No but you can try out a completely free site with a WordPress.com subdomain and upgrade later if you wish. There is little difference between a free plan and a Personal plan regarding how you would build a site.
