  I have had a free site for more than 12 years. Do I need to change to a paid plan.

  Not if you’re happy with the limited features you get with the free plan. Perhaps changing to a more modern free theme would refresh your site though. Twenty Ten is now fifteen years old. But if you’re happy with it then continue as you are as free sites are free forever.
