Cost of domain name gone up?

It seems like it doubled in price for my own domain name. I think I paid about $13 last year. Now it’s $26. Is that for the next two years?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Domain mapping on it’s own is $13. So if you had a domain registered elsewhere that you used on your WordPress.com site, the total cost would be $13. The $26 price is for Domain Mapping, Domain Registration and Private Registration (keeping the contact information required for registering a domain private) for one year.

In simple English I paid WordPress.com $13 to not have “@wordpress.com” tagged on the end of my web address. I didn’t realize that involved “domain mapping” and “domain registration” and “private registration”. Guess I’ll go back to the free version. I can’t understand what the other stuff is, and I have a general rule against paying for stuff I don’t understand. Not the sharpest tool in the shed. Thanks though.

I really didn’t like the threatening pop up that blocked me from my blog this morning. Very aggressive marketing. Either I had to renew or cancel my domain, in which case “your site may not work”. REALLY!!! Has it come down to blackmailing customers? You couldn’t just revert to my prior url? So, if I stop paying extra for a feature, you can just destroy my blog? Nasty, nasty stuff. Not impressed.

If you want to revert to the free URL that’s still possible. I can cancel your domain and remove and refund the subscription and you’ll be back to a free site.

The purpose of the warning was to let you know that if you cancel the domain, it doesn’t become immediately available to be registered elsewhere. So if you want to use the domain on another site, it’s better to transfer it to another registrar, or keep it registered here and point it to your other site.

If you confirm you do not need artofericwayne.com for this or any other site I’ll be happy to cancel it and get you your money back.

Thanks. I already paid the ransom. Perhaps the wording could be a lot less calculatingly threatening. For example, there should be no threat that ones blog will cease to work if one doesn’t cough up the cash. There shouldn’t be a punishment for not wanting to fork over money for an addtional service for a second year. I simply found it didn’t really make a difference if I had a custom URL or not, and I while I thought it was worth $13 a year, I did not think it was work $26. It may be perfectly legitimate, and just a tad careless, or else it could be a somewhat meanspirited method of extricated money from bloggers who have invested countless hours in their personal blogs. Thanks again for your time. Sorry you have your job and have to be the mailman getting shot. I know it’s not you. It’s cut throat capitalism on it’s last leg.
