Costs

I have an as-yet unused domain registered with another provider. I want to start a WordPress site using it on a small scale (new SME in stealth mode) for a limited period and was attracted by the ‘Free’ pricing tier (which if satisfactory I intend within the year to upgrade to paid). I went to do that and the WordPress website tells me that would cost £11 for the year. Since I am already paying registration fees that seemed pointless so I decided on the other option – to transfer the domain to WordPress, at no cost and with no domain fee for a year. Having started that process the website is now asking me to pay £21 for something that the website says is free to start using. What exactly is this fee for and why are you wanting to charge me *more* for doing what is to your ultimate advantage – becoming a domain name customer? Why does the free lowest ranking option disappear (or become hidden)? It feels like either a clumsily unexplained step in the customer journey, or an attempt to slip an unannounced higher charge past me without my noticing. Am I wrong?
    Regards

With a free plan you get a subdomain ending in .wordpress.com or .home.blog or similar. To use your own domain with a WordPress.com site requires a paid plan:
