Could not connect to SMPT host — TestTab.php(line:345)
-
Hi,
I am trying to get WP Mail SMTP working with the ultimate goal of getting WPForms Lite working for my website. For testing, I have deactivated Wordfence secutity and WPForms Lite. I set up a free email account with HostGator for my domain and I’m trying to get WP Mail SMTP to work with this email account. I set the mailer to Other and I believe I have the other settings correctly configured because these settings work successfully in my Windows email client, Mailbird.Howevever, whenever I test this in WP Mail SMTP, I get the error, “Could not connect to SMTP host. Source: WP Mail SMTP /home3/zafflwer/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wp-mail-smtp/src/Admin/Pages/TestTab.php (line: 345). Is there something I need to change in the TestTab.php file? When I installed WordPress, I changed the Administration Email Address from (email visible only to moderators and staff) to my gmail address. Could this have something to do with the problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi WordPress Forum,
Simple answer to an overly complex question. I had the SMTP port number wrong in the Notifications setup. It seems that WP Mail SMTP requires Port 587. I was following the directions in the Welcome email from (email visible only to moderators and staff) which said Port 465. This seems strange as Port 465 worked to set up (email visible only to moderators and staff) in my Windows mail client, MailBird. However, Port 587 is required in WP Mail SMTP. Thanks.Zaffer

Hi, glad you were able to get it sorted! Just to note, your site zafflower.com appears to be using the free WordPress software from WordPress.org, and is not hosted here with us on WordPress.com. That means we typically aren’t really able to look into SMTP issues like this for sites not hosted here, but there is always the WordPress.org community forum who can be a useful place to post:

Hi staff-95,
Thanks for getting back to me. Why did you think zafflower.com is n ORG site? It is a WordPress.com site hosted on Hostgator. Why did you say, “Just to note, your site zafflower.com appears to be using the free WordPress software from WordPress.org, and is not hosted here with us on WordPress.com.” Thanks.

WordPress.com is a hosting platform just as Hostgator. However other hosting providers can’t use WordPress.com, instead they use the open source wordpress.org.

Hi Staartmees,
You are right, I don’t know why I thought it was a COM site. Yes, it’s an ORG site. My apologies.Zaffer
