Could not log in because of Two-Step not sending the sms!

I had a terrible few hours not being able to log in at all because, having enabled Two-Step Authentication as recommended, I was not receiving the sms with the verification code, either because it had not been sent or because my phone has been hacked, I do not know; I could not even contact support and had to write to a Support member directly. Finally I got in using the first of ten BackUp Codes, and do not now know if that means the remaining nine are useless. Any advice appreciated. Also, I am planning to disable Two Step authentication because of this problem.
