Countdown widget
-
I found three previous topics like this, all closed and ‘resolved’ — but as far as I could see there was no resolution.
Briefly: wordpress.com can not accept countdown tickers with javascript or flash, only pure html. I have so far only found one that works, from tickerfactory. However, it’s much too ‘cutesy’ for my taste, and it doesn’t update terribly well. As I am not a very good html-coder myself, I would really appreciate if one of the many whiz-kids out there would make one, with a simple text and numbers counting down, looking something like what you find here:
http://www.widgetbox.com/widget/simple-countdown (yes, it’s in Dutch… :-) )
or even better, just a few numbers.
This is now and old question — the topics I found in the forums were from 2007, but there is still no simple html countdown widget for the wordpress.com users.
Why not…?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Good morning, have you had a look at these? http://onecoolsite.wordpress.com/2008/03/11/how-to-add-a-countdown-ticker-to-your-blog/
-
Yes, I’ve already seen that post, and it simply returns me to the twee tickerfactory. I want something much simpler that also updates as it should… tickerfactory both looks silly and is unreliable. The other suggestions I have found generally don’t work. I keep wondering why wordpress can’t supply their own, simple, countdown widget for the .com blogs. There are so many other widgets available. Or is it that they don’t know how? (like me…)
-
Feel free to submit a request to staff by contacting them directly, however seeing there are several options out there, it might not rank very highly on their to do list.
-
If it gets a ranking at all… after all, I’m just a boringly ordinary blogger. :-) But thanks for your suggestion. Have sent them a request.
-
Where’s your optimism?! If you look at it that way, we all are just boring ordinary bloggers. ;)
And good luck.
-
:-D Well, if not mine, then YOUR optimism paid off and my request is on the wordpress list of ‘things to be considered’ — so we iz hopeful! There is no doubt in my mind that lots of people would use it.
-
Actually there are 5 different sites for counters in that post. And I’m glad to hear your update, namely that staff have placed a countdown ticker on the “things to be considered” list. :)
-
Yes, five different cutesy-pie sites. =)
Looking for the same, something basic without adorable graphics, beach umbrellas, or flowers. Glad to hear it’s on the list!!
-
Well, it’s good to know I’m not the only one who would like one! Still waiting… I keep dropping by the widget selection, but there is still no sign of a countdown. But I’ll keep waiting. :-)
-
I am looking for the same thing. Tickerfactory is just a bit too pre-adolescent and “fluffy” for my liking. I am quite shocked that something so simple is impossible to obtain.
I promise to personally tell ten people about how fantastic WordPress is if the gurus can come up with a modern countdown widget for WordPress.com users!
-
Me too. I have a difficult time imagining this being a horrifically difficult service to provide.
-
I should be able to hack something together. Without JS it’ll probably have to go in it’s own frame with a refresh, but it’d be better than nothing.
-
@danperron, if you are talking about an iframe, then that would not be allowed here due to security concerns.
-
ah, then without js, flash, or frames it seems a realtime countdown is out of the question.
-
Oh, come on. If tickerfactory can put together their cutesy html version and make it work for wordpress.com, why is it not possible to put together something less cutesy for adults?
-
Why don’t you request Tickerfactory make a ticker with a different aesthetic? They make ticker widgets for a living, they’re bound to be more responsive to requests than WP.com.
I’m familiar with how long it can take something to go from the WP.com list of things to be considered to reality…I’ve been here three and a half years and we’re still waiting for most of the things.
-
I too would love to see something as graphically clean as the widgetbox counter available for wordpress.com users.
-
Oops. I was confusing the widgetbox clock with another outfit’s. A little style is nice too, something like <ahref=”http://www.countdownr.com/”>Countdownr or the one at LayoutStyles.
