Country Stats

How accurate are the country stats? It seems as if every time I’m using my child theme to update information France seems to always pop up in the stats with a lot of views and visitors. Is that normal or are the stats playing tricks with me? Could my site be hacked?

    Jetpack: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

  • Hi there,

I’m not sure what you mean by using your child theme to update information. A theme controls how a site looks, but doesn’t have anything to do with the content on a site.

More importantly, nothing you do in the dashboard can have any possible effect on stats, as the Jetpack stats tracking pixel is only loaded on the front end of your site, not in the dashboard (so no amount of weirdness with stats would be an indication that your site has been hacked :) )

I assume you’re in France, correct? If so, and you’re perhaps viewing your site while logged out while making changes, these could be your own views getting recorded. If your browser is blocking third party cookies/cross-site tracking, it could also be recording your own views even though you’re logged in. That seems the most likely explanation here.

    Hi

No I’m not in France, I’m in USA. You confused me at a theme controls how a site looks but not content but isn’t the content the way the site looks? That’s wasn’t my main concern anyways. Upon activating child theme Jetpack’s country stats will automatically load visitors and views from France as if I am in France and it logged my views but there’s a separate field for the views made by the author in WP.com stats and another field that shows the individual country stats. Basically, every time I activate my child theme France pops up in the stats. France has appeared before in the stats without me activating child theme but not with the same amount as when i activate the child theme, so it makes the stats confusing on accuracy.

  • Upon activating child theme Jetpack’s country stats will automatically load visitors and views from France

I don’t know of any way that activating a theme, whether child theme or not, could generate stats on a site. Jetpack only records visits when the stats pixel is loaded in someone’s browser, and that only happens when someone physically views your site.

And the only way a visit would be recorded as coming from France is if the IP address logged for that visitor is geolocated as an IP address from that country.

It might be that your child theme is causing the stats pixel to load in a way, or in pages on your site, where it’s not supposed to load, but that’s not something we’re able to help you troubleshoot here.

You can try asking the folks in the Jetpack support forums at https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/jetpack/ if they have any ideas, but if this is definitely tied to your child theme, then it will likely be better to have whoever developed the child theme look into this for you instead.
