Couple of feedback/questions on new Compose Editor

  • Unknown's avatar

    1. In the old compose window editor, one can replace/update Featured Image and it does not require you to Save the post to reflect the change. In the new compose editor, I have to save the post in order for the change to reflect itself. Can you please look into this difference?

    2. In the old compose editor of the PressIt Bookmarklet, it is possible to automatically grab the image from the source/original website. It nicely uploads the image to my own image repository as well (so I don’t have to worry about source image disappearing in the future).

The new compose editor of the PressIt Bookmarklet, does not have such feature to automatically grab the image from the source/original website. Please check.

1 – I’m not having this issue when I preview a post through the editor. The Featured Image updates every time I click Preview. Did you make sure you refreshed the Preview pane?

2 – I just tested using both of the Press This buttons for one of my sites on the same webpage and did not get an image embedded from either of them. Can you give me a link that I should test this on?

On number 2, using the current PressIt bookmarket, are you not able to click the Add image icon, to grab the image from any website? When I click on ‘insert an image’ icon, it searches for and shows me all the available images on the source website. I then click on any image to insert it into the post. The post automatically uploads the image to my media library (behind the scenes), along with inserting it into the post via my media library link.

This same function is apparently missing in the new editor’s bookmarklet.

Ah! I get it now. Sorry I misunderstood. I’ve passed this along to our developers.

    @shawnajroberts, I just tested the number 1.

I have to click Save in the new editor, in order for the Featured Image to show up. Previously, in the old editor, I could just select the Featured Image (in previously published post where Featured Image is missing) and I do not have to save the post in order for Featured Image to show up in public.

That actually sounds like more of a bug with the classic editor. In order to update any of the settings for the post, you’ll need to click on “Update”.

How could a feature, which is convenient, be a bug?

I find it easy and convenient to insert Featured Images without saving a post. This is because updating and saving old posts sends out a pingback and those are sometime not required or necessary. I’d much rather prefer updating old posts for FIs, without updating the posts itself. After all, it isn’t my fault that the theme I chose, has a requirement for FI, where as previously, the older themes had no FIs.

I suggest you converse with the developers who’ve been around for a while to figure out how this feature could be transitioned to the new editor. Above mentioned two points are the only things blocking me from using new editor.

    Thanks.

I have chatted with our developers and the feeling is that updating the post without notifying the user isn’t a great workflow. I’m submitting a report about the wp-admin behavior to see if we can get this working better, either with some sort of notification that the image is updated or by making sure that updates to a post don’t re-ping all links.

As it stands, there are no plans to add this behavior to the WordPress.com editor. I would suggest you update our old posts with Featured Images through your wp-admin dashboard:

Thanks for following up. I am still using old dashboard and editor. I reported this only when I was forced to use the new editor, where I do not see an option to go back to using the classic editor. It seems it is sporadic for me right now. Sometime I get the new editor (with new slugs) and sometime I get the old one back. Not sure what is going on. Are you guys planning to completely turn off old classic editor? Not too long ago, there used to be a link in the new editor which would take me to the old editor. But i don’t see that link anymore in the new editor.

If you click on the “Edit” links within the page, or in the dropdown menu, you’ll likely land in the WordPress.com editor. If you open the post via the posts list in wp-admin, you’ll get the classic editor.

Nope! We have no plans to remove the classic editor.

Our developers removed this link in the latest update.

Hope this helps! I’ll let you know when I hear back about the bookmarklet issue. :)

Ah, that’s it. I have been opening them through multiple locations lately.

    Good to know. Thanks.

Happy to help! Please let me know if you have any more questions. :)

@shawnajroberts, on number 1 above. I just found out, that not only it is behaving the way I have documented above, but it is also sending out new pings to connected social media, broadcasting the post when none was needed.

I just updated an old post with a featured image using the new editor and saved it. The result was that the post went out to all my connected social media sites.

You should look into this. This is troubling and very inconvenient.

    @shawnajroberts
Apologies if this is seen as hijacking, but I am very curious about what ismailimail mentioned above, since I continually update and try to improve past posts (most are tutorials or informative).

If I connect to social media sites (so far I haven’t done that), do social media announcements go out every time I edit and click save on an old post?!

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello! We only send out social media updates about a post once. So if you didn’t send it out when you initially published and updated the post, with the social media account checked, we’ll publicize it.

You’ve had a post re-publicized? Can you link me to the post and social media share if you didn’t delete it? That is not the intended behavior.

  • Unknown's avatar

I deleted it of course. But I can share the link to the post which caused it.

Above showed up yesterday on FB, Twitter and G+ profile/page. The only thing I did with above post was insert Featured Image and save (I had to save since the post was opened in the New editor).

I prefer to not save the post when inserting Featured Image. This is something I can do if the post is opened in classic editor. But I have no control over when I am getting classic editor and when it throws new editor (I understand, you explained above, but sometime it is not convenient to open posts from dashboard link).

Hopefully you’ll fix these inconsistencies. Another thing stopping me from using new editor (beyond the above two issues) is the fonts you are using around new editor’s icons and sections. Some of these fonts are extremely tiny compared to normal.

Hi, shawnajroberts. I am reporting one more related issue with number 1 above. In the new editor, when I insert Featured Image, it does not show how exactly it is going to look once published (the dimensions are not accurate – it shows full image). Where as in the current/classic editor, I can see exactly how the Featured Image will look (the width/height dimensions are accurate).

This may be Expound theme related issue perhaps (guessing), but it is something you should look at as an inconsistent behavior of the new editor.

    Thanks.

Thanks for the feedback ismailimail !

I haven’t been able to reproduce the publicize issue you mentioned. My hunch is that when you originally published these old posts you did not publicize them, which means that the publicize option is still available. We do block duplicate publicize actions from happening, but if you weren’t using publicize back then, that could be why these are getting re-triggered.

I’m going to try and track down a test site with some older posts that I can test with on Monday. I’ll let you know what I find!
