Crazy cropping from Publicize to Facebook
-
I can’t find any rhyme or reason to how images get cropped when I use Publicize to share posts to Facebook.
Images get cropped in a number of different ways, and they sometimes end up quite unflattering to the person in the photo.
Some examples are at the link below. All of them are both the “Featured” image, and an image inserted into the post, that’s how my Theme works.
Is there any way to understand and control this?
(Note: 95% of my posts are created ahead of time and then scheduled to post early in the morning, so it’s not feasible that I not use Publicize and instead manually share on Facebook – I’m usually still sleeping when they post)
Here are some screenshots with explanations:

Hi there,
Publicize does not crop anything. We send the image to Facebook exactly as you upload it to your site.
Any cropping that does take place, happens on Facebook’s end, and we have no control over it. It entirely depends on the type of card Facebook decides to use for the post, and that depends on factors, among other things, like the size and dimensions of the image and the excerpt Facebook pulls from your site for the post.
For the post where there’s no image at all, the most likely cause is that the image itself was too small. You can find more info on the recommended image sizes for them to be used in a Facebook preview here:

Thank you Kokkeih. Good to understand this finally.
Do you (or anyone else reading this) know if there is there another plugin for doing this that allows control over image cropping?
Thanks!

I have not personally used a plugin for this job. If you go to https://wordpress.org/plugins/ and use “image cropping” in the search field, you will get a number of results worth looking at.
Another idea would be to use a very consistent format with the post structures. Use the same sized images, post format, etc to see if you can pick up on when and why the images are cropped poorly.

@tdustrude, Facebook uses the short+wide image if the featured image is big enough, otherwise it uses a small square. Most guides I’m reading are suggesting images that are 1200 x 630 pixels, but still under 8MB. So when picking pictures for your post, you might try mentally “cropping” those dimensions (from the middle) to see if the image will work well. If it doesn’t, consider cropping the image yourself.
Hoping this helps! There are lots of articles out there from various sources about the right sizes of images to use for sharing posts to Facebook, so feel free to search the web for more ideas and opinions.
