Create a free site option not showing

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,
When I try to create a new site in my existing account, the option to get the free wordpress domain (i.e., site.wordpress.com) no longer shows, only paid options (purchase a domain and select a wordpress subscription). When I log out of my account, I can see the option though when trying to set up a site from the main wordpress site page. Anyone else having this issue? Thanks for your help.

    Hello,

The links above take me to select a free site, but when I enter a keyword, the list of domains doesn’t show the free wordpress subdomain as a choice, and I’m not sure why. Instead, it’s asking me to select from a list of paid domains only. In the past, I have always been able to select a free subdomain on wordpress. However, when I am not logged in, I can see the free subdomain, but I cannot select it when I log back in. Thanks

Hi there, are you trying to create it from your dashboard? On your dash board there should be a switch site option under your site name, or at the bottom of the dashboard an option to add a site. When you get through the set up process to create the new site, you won’t see the option for a free site until you get to the phase for creating a domain name. When you put in a name in the menu, the first option in the populated suggestions will be the free option followed by custom domain options that you can pay for. I hope this helps!

Yes, I did try to create a site from my dashboard and having the same problem. When I enter keywords to create a domain name, the free site does not show at the top or anywhere in the list of domains.

Are you trying to add it from the Domain option? If you use that option it will only allow you to upgrade with a custom domain. You need to use the Add New Site option and go through those steps to see the free site option in the list.

Yes, I did use add a site. I’ve added sites in the past with no problem; just for some reason it is behaving this way and doesn’t make sense. Thanks.

    @csoneji,

You may add a new, free site here: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1. If you presently have one of more existent WordPress.com sites, a link to the create a site page, a button labeled “Register Another Blog,” may be found at the bottom right of the WP Admin My Blogs page for each site.

@csoneji, have you already created the site? When I look at a site that I already selected the free domain (whatever was suggested) and then go back to look at “Domains”, it does only show me a list of upgraded options. I wonder if it already thinks a link is created?

That’s odd that you are seeing it available when you aren’t logged in. Are you seeing its availability through WP or through another site that checks available domain names?

    Correction to my posts above:
“If you presently have one or more existent WordPress.com sites…”

  • Hi there,

I’m not able to replicate this – it should show the free address at the very top of the list of suggested domains.

What address are you trying to add? Can you please take a screen shot of the addresses that are suggested to you? You can upload it to your media library, or a service like Cloudup.com, and then I can take a look there.

It doesn’t seem to matter what keywords I type, as I have the same problem. Now it is showing this message in red after I type keywords (which also happened before, but I thought it was a problem with when I was trying to add a site from the ios app a few days ago):

“Sorry, there was a problem processing your request. Please try again in a few minutes.”

I’ve also tried switching browsers from chrome to edge to no avail. When it was listing the domains yesterday, everything looked normal except it wasn’t showing the free wordpress subdomain as an option.

  • Okay, now when you tried there was a problem with all domains on WordPress.com. That has just been fixed, so can you please clear your browser cache and then try again?

If it still doesn’t give you the option for a free address, please try to take that screen shot for me of the options it does show you.

I cleared the cache/cookies and restarted the browser, but that didn’t work. I’ve uploaded the screen shot you requested to my media library. Thanks.

  • Hmm. You should definitely be seeing the option for a free site there. I’ve tried with different accounts, and I see the free site option every time. I’ve confirmed that it doesn’t appear for your account, though.

When was the last time that you created a new free address? Can you remember?

  • Unknown's avatar

Probably a few months ago I think was the last time.

  • Thanks for that info. I’m asking some people to take a look at this. I’ll let you know once I have more information.

  • Can you please check if you’re able to create a new site now?

It should work now, though I also notice you have eight other unused sites already in your account. Perhaps you can use/rename of them instead of creating yet another new site :)
