Create a new WP site without affecting existing website

i have just installed wordpress on Hostgator. i was preiously using the Hostgator sitebulder to create me website. I have decided to move over to wordpress. The issue that I am having is that when I make an update, the “Live preview” only shows the existing website. i need to keep the existing website active until i am ready to publish the new wordpress site. does anyone have any input?
Also, at times, i am able to get the editor to show the current changes that i am making in the live preview but the I only have the option to “save & publish” i do not want to publish an incomplete site and i cannot make the site private because i need the existing site to remain live.

Do you mean WordPress.com? WordPress.com and WordPress.org are different versions of WordPress, with different support forums. See the WordPress.com and WordPress.org support page.

What is the address (URL) of the website you are referring to? Where are you making the update? On WordPress.com, you may only update or customize one site at a time.
I only have the option to “save & publish” i do not want to publish an incomplete site and i cannot make the site private because i need the existing site to remain live.
On a WordPress.com site, the “Save & Publish” button at Customize does not publish the site, instead it just updates the site to incorporate any changes you’ve made at Customize. However, if the site is not marked private, then it’s already published.
