I wish to create this page and write various items I wish to place on this static page and make attractive. This will be a pro-format.
Title Blog with style, color of Fonts, same with Heading. Same with Theme.
    A Welcome Message:
My Profile described in about ten lines:
Like of Opera, Blues/Jazz, Celtic, C&W, Folk, Fado, Musette – STARS.
Like DVD’s List of types and genres.
Like Kindle Reading list showing authors of FBI Crime and Romance.
Create a ballet dancer moving across the page.
Create a menu on left side to supply information about where to find things for readers to view my page.
Fix about 8 pictures permanently around the page
I cannot seem to get any information when I click on Pages – ADD New as per your instructions printed in your support guide?
You advise create galleries with a whole A4 page of information.
I wish to start and prepare this page in full!
The 2nd page is not so important as it is for my posts and readers comments.
Hope you can guide me on the correct procedure.

You are trying to eat the whole loaf without taking small bites of the bread!

Start your site, a nibble at a time. Work through this tutorial:
    http://learn.wordpress.com/
You can set your blog to private so only you see it. Learn about how this platform works, what you can do with all the many features one by one. Play and practice to explore the possibilities.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

Then ask questions about specific things you want to do.

If you want to write a blog, then it will take effort on your part to learn how to make it work. We volunteers can help you with specific information. None of us can tell you how to complete your task until you endeavor to make something of it.

    Thank you 1tess,

I will make private as you suggest. Mind you I don’t see how that will help me. I am very used to checking this type of procedure, and have downloaded over 30 A4 pages of your instruction manuals so I can check over the items off-line, which makes it easier to understand.
However, I find the set up procedure does not seem to follow any sequence of chronological order. Therefore, I have been fumbling in the dark at various stages.
When I opened the section Homepage: Where your manual states : ” In this section you’ll learn how to Get set up with a static homepage.” I failed to find one word or sentence which told me how go ahead and create a static homepage, after clicking on Pages – Add New. In fact most of the page was blank.
I also find the manual keeps telling me to post comments. Why would I want to post comments when I don’t have a correct functioning webpage. I would have thought that creating posts would be right at the very end of the how-to-manual.

I only suggested you set your blog to private so you could experiment without search engines finding your practice posts and pages—me, I’d choose the second privacy option so forum volunteers could see it when help is needed. Some folks are embarrassed to show their incomplete work publicly. Sorry I didn’t explain that better.

Now, I’m confused about what manual you are talking about. Did you print out the http://learn.wordpress.com/ tutorial?

As for your question about setting up a static front page, here is the support article about that:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

    1. Click Pages -> Add New in your Dashboard.
    2. Title this page “Home” (you can, of course, name it whatever you like).
    3. Type the content you want displayed on the front page of your blog and publish it.
    4. Write another new page.
    5. Title this page “Posts” (Or “blog” if you want sitename.com/blog)
You don’t need to type content, because it won’t be displayed. Publish the page.
    6. Click Settings -> Reading on the left menu in your Dashboard.
You will see the following options. Set yours to look like this:

    Hello 1tess,
Thank you again. I printed out any information I could find on wordpress, including terminology. How to start. Afterwards I spent sometime digesting all this information, making notes on what to do. However, I found much of this information was not complete, maybe ok for technicians, but not lay people. I also found the information jumped all over the place, instead of keeping to one subject at a time.
No good talking about themes, and then moving to publishing a comment. This is most confusing to lay persons.
Remember most new customers have no knowledge of webpage design?
    Regarding your latest comment:
” Type the “content” you want “displayed” on the front page of your blog and publish it ! ” Does this mean I can just type up my own menus and what I want to include on the static front page. I wish to include all the items I mentioned in my first email to the forum ?
I know how I wish to present all these items, but have no knowledge of how to embed into the static front page, such as, include a gallery of pictures, not showing, but ready to use individual pictures with a click in a post. I have already downloaded a great number of pictures to my intended blog, but have no idea of where they are currently sitting ?
Wordpress instructs users in how to create a gallery, but not how you click on them to use same in an article.
In the past I have instructed complete beginners as a volunteer in how to use computers and found many had never typed. However, I am a persistent person and over came this predicament by repeating everything many times.
I am pleased that I have found someone with experience.
    Best Wishes.

The best information you will find is the tutorial written specifically for users of WordPress.com which is where your site is located http://learn.wordpress.com/ Work through it step-by-step and then use the Support site to target specific topics http://en.support.wordpress.com/

Anything else you find on the web about “WordPress” most likely has to do with the standalone version of the WordPress software. That information may or may not be relevant for the environment here at WordPress.com; better to start first with the information specific to WordPress.com.

    Just Jennifer,
Thank you for your advice. I first contacted WordPress about three weeks ago for preliminary information and your Editor, Cherie contacted me and advised me to peruse various information manuals.
I did so and found them baffling with no precise format for proceeding in an orderly manner.
I now have three blogs with static webpages, how this happened I have no idea. I want to delete two of them, but have no understanding of how I delete without losing all my created work. This includes downloaded photos.
At the start I expected this would be a simple matter, but I find WordPress a complete mess with it’s instructions and to me the formulae is set out like a jumble sale.
Just now I have received a message on my draft blog. ” Sorry, I can’t find what you are looking for.” How is that possible
Quite a few pages have no information on what to do, am I supposed to be a magician and wave a wand.
Have you read the WordPress instructions yourself and tried to follow them? No good supplying a tutorial that is not furnishing the correct information
I would appreciate if you would have a look at these blogs of mine and suggest the best way forward.

I’m sorry you are finding this difficult, but like my colleague 1tess said, you’re trying to eat the whole loaf at once.

If you do not find the Learn WordPress.com tutorial helpful, perhaps you would do better with “WordPress for Dummies” by Lisa Sabin-Wilson. Her book mostly deals with standalone WordPress, but she does have a few chapters on using WordPress.com. You can probably find it online or at the library.

Also, did you notice that every page in your site’s Dashboard comes with a help button in the top right corner of the screen? That will provide you with contextual help.

    About your questions:
Being a forum volunteer, the only site I can see is the public one you’ve linked to happywanderingphilosopher.wordpress.com and the reason nothing is found is because you have most likely deleted the “Hello World” post. http://en.support.wordpress.com/not-found/#front-page

If you have set a Page as a static homepage according to these instructions http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/ , then you need to add some content. You do that by editing the static front page.

I am sorry, but that is all the time I have for the forum right now. If you come back with specific questions, perhaps another forum volunteer will be able to help.

    Best wishes.
