Create a web site
-
I started off using WP by trying to build a blog. On reflection, not what I want. Two questions: (1) how do I create a web site? (Help files seem to be of no use since I have followed them and I still have a blog, not a web site) and (2) how do I connect the landing page and subsequent pages together (I have created two pages and neither is connected to the other, although — again — I followed the instructions). What am I missing?
WP.com: Yes
Jetpack: No
Correct account: YesThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The differences between the two (Blog/Website) can easily be blurred depending on the Theme you use to display your content.
You can find a variety of Themes to match the type of website you want. Some examples could be Atar, Iotix, or Spiel. This function is listed under Appearance in your Dashboard.
For the Page connections, you can accomplish this by placing links to the other pages on your landing page. You could use a Button or one of the Menus. Depending on the Theme you choose, you may have Header, Footer, and Sidebar menu options. A common sight is the Navigation bars in a site’s Header.
If these options don’t quite suit your fancy, it is possible to customize all of the elements on a page template to create exactly what you want. This is perhaps a more advanced option and could take a while to figure out.
Another option is to have the WP experts craft you a site, but that will cost money. The above options can all be done for free.

I forgot to clarify how page linking works.
After you have set a menu or button on your landing page, you can select the block or text and click the Link button on the context menu that appears. The little “Chain Link” icon next to Italics. You can then enter the URL of the page you want the link to reference.

You can use the Link option with Pages, Posts, and external URLs.
If you decide to use a navigation menu in a header or footer, you can edit where the links go in Appearance>Editor>Navigation.
There are some differences in the appearance of the Editor depending on your chosen Theme. I don’t remember what each one is called, but I prefer the older style.
This is the newer editor:

Thanks, but I am not sure this answers my question. I have something WP calls a blog. I don’t want a blog. I follow WP instructions to create a web site — not a blog — and it *still* creates a blog.

The Blog Page is included with most of the Themes, but you can delete it if you don’t need it. Everything is customizable. Just hit the 3 dots next to the page and select Trash.
If you have some time, I suggest looking at other websites that were built using WP to get an idea of how you want your own site to appear. Many popular designs can either be found as Themes or can be created from scratch.
There are millions of websites across the web and a big chunk of them are running on the WordPress software. Blogs are just another type of website, typically focused on individual posts in a diary format.
Some examples of notable websites that were built using WordPress:
TechCrunch, Sony Music, The Walt Disney Company, and Vogue. We’ve also got The New York Times, Reuters, and BBC America all running on WP.
