Create forum using WordPress

Hi. I’m looking to create/host an online forum, and I want it to be part of a WordPress website I have. I did some research and found a link to ‘bbPress’, but I have a couple questions about it:

1). If I create a forum using bbPress, does this mean that users posting comments in the forum will need a WordPress account to sign in?
2). Can I make my bbPress forum a part of a WordPress website I already have?
3). To use bbPress, I have to upgrade my website to a Business Plan. Is there any way to access a free trial (no upgrade necessary) of bbPress to see how it works before I commit?

Thanks very much for your help.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Another follow-up question: Is there a smaller fee I could pay to use the bbPress plug-in without the full Business Plan upgrade? The only thing offered by the Business Plan that’d be of use to me is this plug-in, so if there’s a way to get around doing a full upgrade, that’d also be great.

    Thanks.

  • Hi there,

1). If I create a forum using bbPress, does this mean that users posting comments in the forum will need a WordPress account to sign in?

They will, yes. That is a limitation to how site membership on WordPress.com works.

2). Can I make my bbPress forum a part of a WordPress website I already have?

Yes. You just install the plugin, and create the additional pages you’d need for that to work based on the bbPress documentation at https://bbpress.org/

3). To use bbPress, I have to upgrade my website to a Business Plan. Is there any way to access a free trial (no upgrade necessary) of bbPress to see how it works before I commit?

We do not offer free trails, but all our plans are fully refundable for 30 days after purchase if you decide it’s not what you’re looking for.

Is there a smaller fee I could pay to use the bbPress plug-in without the full Business Plan upgrade?

No. Installing plugins require the Business Plan. We don’t sell any upgrades independently of a plan.

  • Depending on how big and active your forum will be, and alternative to bbPress that you can consider is our P2 theme – it works differently from other themes in that you can create posts directly from the site itself, i.e. without using the dashboard editor, and comments on post appear on the main posts page and update in real time. So it can be used as a single-channel forum.

Someone would need to have a WordPress.com account to be able to create new posts on the forum, but a WordPress.com account is not required to comment on posts, depending on your comment settings.
