Is there a way to create a skin or layout or unique look to my blog, and if so where do I go?

The better answer is no and yes. If you would like to create your own Theme for submission to WordPress.com choices, then this article for some good how tos (and how not tos) and Designing Theme for Public Release from the WordPress Codex to help you get started. If your Theme is accepted by WordPress.com for inclusion, it will be available to everyone.

If you want a “unique look” for your WordPress.com blog, the answer is no, though some new themes now feature some minimal customization features and options. Expect more Themes with such customization to be arriving over time.

If you really want to tweak things up, then get the full version of WordPress and have at it. Slice and dice to your heart’s content.

Yuo can buy the CSS upgrade which will allow you a certain amount of customization.

-> dashboard -> presentation -> themes

you can choose any theme listed there and test customising it free of charge -> dashboard – > presentation -> edit css

this allows you to test or “play” with a theme prior to purchasing the upgrade

you can choose “sandbox” theme and then customize it – some folks had already done this and the themes they produced can be viewed in the css csutomization forum threads

there are 3 pink sticky threads at the head of the css customization forum with resurces and customization info and themes in them
