Create new site stuck at "Hooray! Your site will be ready shortly."

  From this page https://wordpress.com/pricing/ I click on Sign Up at the bottom of the Free column.
  It takes me to this page https://wordpress.com/start/free/site-type?ref=pricing-lp
  but it never seems to get past the message “Hooray! Your site will be ready shortly.”
  Please advise.

  Hi there!

  I can see you have already created a site 5775couk.wordpress.com. Is everything working as expected already?

  Hi, the original problem still exists and needs fixing for other users.
  I couldn’t get anywhere choosing the “free” site option.

  I tried again and chose the £3 a month option and when it came to the part where you have to pay I dropped out and when I went back to “My Sites” and lo and behold the new site (5775couk) was in the list as a free site.

  So yes I have created a free site, but no, everything is not working as expected, there is a problem with the WordPress.com site.

  Since you already have your site it may not be of use to you, but in case you wanted to create another one, these are the instructions to create a free site:

  Step 1: Click on Add new site.

  Step 2: select Blog for a .home.blog free site or Business for a .wordpress.com site.

  Step 3: Select the Topic of your site.

  Step 4: Type in the Title of site (optional).

  Step 5: Type in the full, exact site address you want including the .wordpress.com or .home.blog subdomain (ex: freeexamplesite.wordpress.com, freeexampleblog.home.blog). The first option should be the free site that you manually typed in. Click select next to that option.

  Step 6: At the very top, click the link that says: start with a free site.

  Then, your free site should be created.
