  I would like to create the site before I point it to a domain. Is that possible?

  You have a few options, depending on what exactly you’re looking for. You could point the domain to your new website, and create a maintenance landing page, while you work on the website in the background. You can also create a local WordPress installation on your computer in a developers environment to create your website. This will take a little more technical ‘know how’ but it is possible.
