Create site without transferring domain just yet

  I am in the beginning phase of creating a new website for our organization. I want to create an account so I can get into what the back-end of the site would look like and see if WordPress is right for us, but I don’t want to transfer my domain name just yet. I need our current site to stay live as is before I make the switch. How can I move forward without transferring the domain name right now? It won’t let me skip that step.

  It won’t let me skip that step.

  Then don’t add a custom domain. Instead type a word or phrase and create a free site with a .wordpress.com or .home.blog or similar suffix. You can always upgrade to a paid plan at a later date when/if you decide you want to transfer/map a custom domain to that site.
