  Can I create a free website, download the content and then host on my own domain?

  Hi there, yes, you can export the content of your free WordPressdotcom website and upload it to your own install of the open source WordPress software on 3rd party hosting.

  The Export file will contain all text from your site, posts, pages, comments, feedback, but things like your theme, widgets, custom menus will need to be recreated. https://en.support.wordpress.com/export/

  You can also use your domain here on your WordPressdotcom site. For that you’d need to upgrade to at least the Personal plan to map your domain and then keep up both your site plan here and your domain renewal with your registrar. Here’s more on that:
