Create website while leaving current site live

Hi,
I am looking to create a new website using wordpress and currently have a website using wix. I am looking to literally duplicate the site for the most part. My question: Is there a way to create a wordpress site while leaving my current website with wix live? I am asking because our company cannot simply just be MIA for a couple month is regard to our website. Once the wordpress site is finished, I would transfer the domain. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Hi there,
All sites on WordPress.com get a free WordPress.com or .blog subdomain when the site is created, that functions just like any regular subdomain, and your site is fully online and accessible at that subdomain (provided you set it to public).
So you can experiment and build your site at that free address, import your existing content from Wix, and even upgrade the site while still using the free address. Then you can switch the domain over to us only once you’re ready to take the existing site offline.

Thank you for your reply. One question. When I try to migrate my wix content to wordpress it gives me an option to either “transfer your domain from your current registrar” or “Map your domain without moving it from your current registrar” Which option would I choose if I wanted to leave my wix site fully functional and not have my wordpress site live while I work on it and fine tune it? Or are there other/additional steps I should take?
To simplify: I would like to migrate content from my wix site to wordpress and then work on the “non-live” wordpress site further, leaving my wix site live until I am ready to cancel my wix platform and finish the migration.

I don’t see any sites on the account you’re contacting us from. Are you using a different WordPress.com account to import your Wix site?
Regarding your domain issue, can you please share a screenshot of the options you’re given as I’m not able to replicate it.

Yes that’s correct, I don’t have an active wordpress site yet because I have not built one yet. I am trying to learn how to migrate my content from Wix onto a brand new wordpress site.

It might be easier to do as @kokkieh said and just create a free site (any offered free address will do) to begin with
https://wordpress.com/pricing/ and worry about upgrading to a paid plan to map/transfer your domain to that WordPress.com site later on. -
Kokkieh said that I can import my wix site content onto wordpress….is this not possible without taking my live wix site down? I am not looking to transfer my domain right away, just the site content.

Start a free site using the following link and then start the import from Wix. There’s no need to take down your Wix site. The importer copies your contents idt doesn’t move them.
