Create your own domain for $2.99

Hello, please help! I chose your Personal Plan for creating my domain and website. When I click okay, it suddenly says this domain in included in Premium Plan and that I have to upgrade! Why? Under personal plan, it says you CAN have your own unique domain. Help. Thank you! Nadia

Are you trying to map from a .wordpress.com blog to an existing domain that you already own?
-
Every domain mapping is an upgrade that requires us to select a plan. It is NOT possible to use a custom domain URL without selecting a plan and paying for an upgrade.
You have to upgrade in order to use a custom domain to map to from an underlying .wordpress.COM sub domain URL. Domain mapping replaces the .wordpress.com URL with the domain URL. You must be logged in under the exact same username account that registered the .wordpress.com site to upgrade.
re: purchasing upgrades

It can take up to 72 hours for domain propagation to take place throughout the internet but it doesn’t usually take that long. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

Hello…thanks so much for your quick reply! I am so frustrated. I an not mapping from an existing URL nor a .WordPress blog.
I am looking to have my own website with my own domain for the first time….and I see that your Personal Plan says “Custom Domain Name”. What am I missing?
Nadia -
Hi Nadia,
If you want the Personal Plan, first go to My Site ->Plans and add the plan there, and then go to My Site ->Domains to claim your free domain. If you try to add the domain first, the Premium Plan is added automatically.
Please let me know if you need any more help with this.

Thanks tumethief and kokkieh,
I did what kokkieh suggested:
I cannot find any place on WordPress that says “my Site”, so I clicked on the followinf:
“See plans”;
“Compare plans”;
“Start with personal”;
Step 1 appears saying “Let’s Get Started” and I have to click on one of 4 tiles – I clicked on “a welcome page for my site”;
Step 2 appears saying “Choose a theme” – I clicked on “Gateway”;
Step 3 appears saying “Let’s find a domain” – when I type in my chosen Non-wordpress domain name it says “Available! Included in WordPress.com Premium” and there is a link to click which says “Upgrade>”.
I haven’t clicked that as I believe Premium is $10/month, and I want Personal.
Help! Is this because I can’t find the link that says “my site”?
Thanks! -
Okay..found My Site (I wasn’t logged in) –
BUT it still brings me to Step 3 – “Available – Included in WordPress.com Premium – Upgrade>”.
?? -
Sorry, I missed previously that you’re trying to create a new site.
If you select a custom domain at signup, it will automatically add Premium as well. So pick the free domain in Step 3, and then the Personal Plan in step 4. Then you can add the domain after the site is created.
-
Oh!! So you mean to pick the free domain ending with “WordPress.com”?
Then once I have that website, how do I upgrade to the Personal Plan? -
And can I change my username from itsiesbitsies to something else?….or do I have to create a brand new account?
Thanks again. -
You can change your username from account settings, yes. Just be aware that if you choose to discard the current username during the process, it will not ever be available again.
The free domain is the *.wordpress.com address, yes.
