Creating a domain name of WordPress.com
-
I tried setting up a free blog with WordPress.com, and was requested to create a custom address(domain name? Complete technophobe here?). They suggested some names, but I wanted Lydiavioletrosebud.writing.com, as I was informed that I needed a domain name related to the industry I wish to have links with, me attempting to succeed as an ebook and film script writer. I put that name into the search box, but nothing happened. I was just still shown the ones that they were suggesting. Is there a way round this? Can I register a domain name later, with the one I have chosen, once my blog is set up?

From a search engine aspect it’s a good idea to give yourself a good custom domain name right from the start. But the name you entered Lydiavioletrosebud.writing.com is a subdomain of writing.com, which, unless you own that domain, would not be possible.
You can set up a plain vanilla wordpress.com address regardless (like lydiavioletrosebudwriting.wordpress.com) and get started, but if you think you want to have a custom domain name, you should set it up fairly soon.

Could someone please tell me the difference between a custom domain and a domain name? Still a bit confused by these terminologies. And when I go onto the WordPress.com website to set up my free blog, do I have to create a custom address(domain name) while going through this process? When I attempted this before it didn’t acknowledged the wording I placed there? I am a complete technophobe, so maybe justjinnifer is right about the suggestion that I may have put the wrong wording into the search engine. So I will go to it now to see what happens next. If anyone can supply some answers to the above, I’d welcome that.

Every free site on WordPress.com is a subdomain of wordpress.com for example, in the name I gave you above lydiavioletrosebudwriting.wordpress.com the part in italics is the subdomain of wordpress.com
A Custom Domain is something like lydiavioletrosebudwriting.com It removes the wordpress part.
You do not have to register a Custom Domain to set up a site on WordPress.com

You can register a custom domain name anytime in the future no need to register one today – yes you will take a bit of a hit for search engine results when you go to a custom domain name – but it goes away in a while, and if your site is relatively new you might not even notice the dip –
If you do get a custom domain name & domain mapping in the future all the links to your original Posts & Pages will keep working and visitors will be sent automatically to the new custom domain name –
