Creating a folder to make a child theme

Hi
I’ve seen all the tutorials on how to create a child theme but the first step is to create a folder. How do I create a folder? Do I just make a word doc? And how do I upload it to my site? Do I need a plugin? I searched all over the forums for this but none clearly answered this question (that or I’m not asking the right question). Any guidance would be appreciated.
